Choppy framerate in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

This is an older game from 2002 that's utilizing Direct3D 8 / DirectX 8. I'm currently using an Intel Arc B580 on an i5-12400F with this system, with Resizeable BAR enabled. I'm using Intel Graphics Driver 32.0.101.6262 on this Windows 11 PC.

The game is supposed to run at 60fps, but it seems to be running at around 30fps, maybe even 20fps by the looks of it. This does not happen on my other PCs with Nvidia Geforce 1080 Ti GPUs.

Hello ReL0aDed,

I understand that you are not getting the expected performance with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. Please help with the information below for me to isolate this issue.

1. Is the issue isolated to this game?

2. Was this working fine before?

3. Have there been any recent changes to the system?

4. Have you tried swap testing the GPU on that same system?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

Hi, thanks for the reply.

1. The issue is only isolated to this very game. Strangely enough, the older Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 games for PC runs just fine (on THPS3 I have something called partymod installed, but I'm not sure that mod does anything major to the way that game displays graphics). I have in total 6 desktop PCs, 4 of them still have GTX 1080 Ti GPUs. The ones with GTX 1080 Ti GPUs have no issues whatsoever running THPS4. As of now the overall game compatibility of the B580 GPU honestly blows me away, because of all the ancient early 3D games from the late 90s / early 2000s I've thrown at this B580 GPU, I've only had issues with THPS4 as of yet.

2. The game was working just fine with the Nvidia GeForce 1080 Ti GPU I had installed on the same PC prior to upgrading to an Intel Arc B580 Limited Edition GPU. This is not an isolated case for only this PC, as I have an almost exact PC build next to it (Mini-ITX build that also have an i5-12400F that got upgraded from an GTX 1080 Ti to an B580 Limited Edition GPU, just like the PC I sent the system report txt file from). The other almost identical PC (the only difference on the other build is a newer Mini-ITX motherboard with DDR5 support instead of DDR4) with an B580 Limited Edition GPU also has this framerate issue with THPS4, which it didn't have with the GTX 1080 Ti it used before.

3. The only change to this (as well as the other) system is changing from an GTX 1080 Ti GPU to an B580 Limited Edition GPU, and uninstalling all the Nvidia drivers & software as well as installing the Intel Arc drivers & software.

4. No, I haven't done so. In my case, with all the PC Desktop builds I have, I don't think it's necessary.

My guess is that this framerate issue can be because of a tiny driver bug. Maybe this happens to other Direct3D 8 games as well? I also tried making a profile for THPS4 on the Intel Arc software and make the framerate in the Intel Arc software override the framerate of THPS4, but the framerate of THPS4 did not improve after doing so (I have to do this trick with the old game Deus Ex to not make that game's framerate choppy (more info on PCGamingWiki, the Nvidia fix works with the B580), but that's an Nvidia issue as well with Unreal Engine 1 games utilizing Kentie's Direct3D 10 renderer).

Hello ReL0aDed,

Thank you for sharing all this information. Upon checking, some of the oldest titles have compatibility issues. This results in any of the following symptoms:

  • The PC game fails to run.
  • The PC game doesn't run at full screen.
  • The PC game runs slow.
  • There are graphical artifacts.
  • Random texture rendering issues.

You can try following the troubleshooting steps below:

1. Run the game as Administrator:

2. Run the game in Compatibility mode:

3. Use different Compatibility settings:

For reference: Running Older PC Games on Windows® 10 and Intel® HD/UHD Graphics

Should you encounter the same issue, please create a new thread as this thread will no longer be monitored.

As this issue is still present on my two PCs with B580 Limited Edition GPUs, even after trying out the provided solutions, I've created a new topic on this issue here.
