I recently purchased a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 (ARL) laptop equipped with Intel Core Ultra 7 258V (Lunar Lake) and integrated Arc graphics. I’m encountering a recurring issue related to the Display-External module.
The Windows Event Viewer constantly reports the following error:
Source: Intel-Gfx-Display-External
Event ID: 10
Level: Error
Description: Unable to find the message description for event ID 10...
This happens even when no external monitor is connected.
The error logs occur frequently and continue even after system reset and driver reinstallation.
🧪 Troubleshooting Already Tried:
Performed clean installation of multiple official Intel drivers:
32.0.101.6913 (via Intel DSA)
32.0.101.6326 (via Lenovo official website)
32.0.101.6042 — the only version where this error disappears
Tried disabling Windows automatic driver updates
Checked system with and without connecting an external monitor
Clean install of Windows 11 23H2 — problem persists with newer drivers
1. What exactly is the Display-External module responsible for?
2. Why does it keep throwing errors when no external display is connected?
3. Is this error harmless, or does it indicate an actual compatibility issue with Arc graphics or Lunar Lake hardware?
4. Will future drivers remove this redundant module or fix the issue?
This seems to be a problem unique to some Lunar Lake systems — I've seen no widespread reports but the issue is repeatable and only disappears on older drivers like 6042.

That error you seeing - Display-External Event ID 10 seems to be caused by a bug in the newer Intel graphics drivers. Basically, theyre a bit overzealous about checking for external displays, even when none are connected. Driver version 32.0.101.6042 doesn’t have this issue, likely because it handles that display detection logic differently. It’s a driver-side issue, and the Intel devs will need to patch how the driver handles external display polling, especially on newer platforms like Lunar Lake. That’s why reporting this with logs is super helpful. But let me tell you this, to reduce the spammy error messages no guarantees, but worth a shot-
1. Disable Hot Plug Detection in BIOS (if your system supports it)
2. Turn off USB-C display output features you’re not using
3. Uninstall Intel Graphics Command Center if it’s not needed
4. Check if Lenovo Vantage or other tools are touching display settings in the background
hope it helps..

or maybe you can try to stop Windows from reinstalling a newer (broken) driver. Just open the gpedit.msc and go to the - Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates Set it to Enabled and restart your system and check if the error goes away in Event Viewer...
