I can’t play Black Mesa properly

Hello, I have recently download Black Mesa from Steam and I could not play it correctly.

I have seen videos in YouTube about some general bugs like textures or lights and I happily fixed them, but I have an specific problem with some scenes with flames and smokes. I tried to change some video settings with low quality but the problems still persist (I will upload an screenshot about that bug).

I would like to know if someone had the same problems and how you fixed them, if that is the case.

Thanks for your reply.

Hello Anthony97,

Thank you for posting in our communities.

Please generate an SSU report to help me further analyze important details on your system, such as the complete model of your system, the complete model of your graphics card, etc. To generate the SSU report, please refer to the article: How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*. Please send us the generated SSU.txt file.

We look forward to your response!

Hello Anthony97,

Thank you so much for the quick response.

Please check this article as it contains troubleshooting steps that might fix the issue with regards to graphics corruption when playing Black Mesa when using Arc graphics:

If the solution in the article does not work, kindly provide a screenshot or a screen recording of your game settings, as I will raise the case with our engineers so they can replicate the issue with our lab.

Furthermore, I have checked your SSU file, and I confirm that your system meets the game requirements.

By the way, is it possible that you can describe to me more regarding the smoke and fire issue on the Black Mesa? Does the smoke make the game blurry, and should the fire not be scattered in some places? Please correct me if I'm wrong regarding my assumptions. I just wanted to know the precise issue that we have.

Thank you for your understanding.

Best regards,

Hello Carmona A,

I have checked the article and i did everything that is posted there, but unfortunately it did not work. I am sharing a video and three screenshots where you can see the problem.

The smoke does not have a good quality, seems like a problem with texture or i do not know how to describe exactly, but there are some scenes where the smoke is normal without any problem.

Please, check the video and the screenshots to see that problem with smoke from flames.

Thank you for your help.

Hello Anthony97,

Thank you so much for the quick response.

And I truly appreciate that you have tried the recommendation that I have provided.

I have checked the video that you have shared, and it appears that the graphics corruption happens between the smoke and the fire. My next step will be to raise the case with our engineers so they can further isolate the issue and provide us with appropriate recommendations.

Then, once I have their response, I will update you as soon as possible.

By the way, thank you so much for your cooperation and patience.

Best regards,

Carmona A.

Hello Carmona A,

Thank you for checking the video. As you can see, the problem appears only between the smoke and fire, but everything else looks great. I really appreciate your help and i will be waiting for the answer from the engineers.

Best regards.

Unfortunately, the Source Engine has a default GPU setting and is set to change automatically according to your GPU or integrated GPU, and has no issues that Black Mesa has with games like Half-Life 2, or even games made as modifications for use with Source SDK Bases, which is how Black Mesa started out. The devs behind the game, Crowbar Collective, chose to override that default setting and to my understanding didn't properly do so, and chose to include outdated drivers that are not compatible with Intel based GPUs, and can render the flashlight useless and cause the lighting in each map to slowly get darker until you can't see where you're going. As well as what you mentioned with the smoke and fire. This is most likely because the drivers included are Nvidia based if I understood what I found online correctly, and the best fix I've found that works without turning on fullbright in the console is to set two launch parameters for Black Mesa in your game's properties on Steam. These two will spoof your Intel Arc A770 as the one Black Mesa expects and will run and play almost perfectly.

The launch parameters are as follows:

"-force_vendor_id 0x10DE -force_device_id 0x1180"

Make sure you don't include the quotation marks, the GPU that BM will believe you have is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 680, and without setting those params in the game properties (unless a user has an Nvidia based GPU) the game will be very difficult to navigate and play as it is incompatible with Intel based GPUs until Crowbar Collective either decides to fix it or at least offer the commands I've given you for players on Intel powered devices.

If your game also crashes before you can get past the splash screen after opening the game, you may need to also set a third parameter as well:

"-oldgameui"

It sets your menu screen to one that closely resembles the default Source Engine game menus found in HL2 and Half-Life: Source, and as a bonus - it's nowhere near as resource heavy as the custom UI can be.
