Intel Arc A770 - Fatal DirectX Error in FFXIV - Part 2

Hello,

The error has returned. It was fine for a while after I upgraded my bios as mentioned in the previous thread, as weird as that sounds, but it started happening intermittently once more. I have opened a bug report with SquareEnix as suggested.

I want to make sure this is indeed a result of the game and their in-game graphics settings. You said you were able to replicate the error. What methods did you use to replicate it?

I've done extensive troubleshooting to try and confirm it is not my hardware or software. I'd like to detail everything I've done to try and isolate the error:

  • Updated BIOS again
  • GPU drivers are updated, cleaning uninstalled with DDU in Safe Mode and reinstalled after reboot
  • Ran the game after fresh reboot with no other programs running whatsoever
  • Game is run completely vanilla with no injectors or anything else
  • Checked Reliability Monitor and noticed a LiveKernelEvent Code 141 generated at every instance of the error
  • Conducted stress tests on the GPU to confirm it was not having issues using Furmark, Valley, and Heaven and at no point did it crash, suggest instability or insufficient power
  • Confirmed temperature was within safe limits, under load card never got hotter than 68C, memory and CPU reached between 72-74C
  • Used Windows Memory Diagnostics and Memtest86+ to confirm integrity of RAM, both tests passed, no errors
  • Used chdsk to verify hard drive stability, no errors
  • Used DISM and SFC to confirm integrity of the OS, repairs were made
  • Windows is completely updated, including optionals
  • Reinstalled DirectX via a Redist to verify it was not corrupted
  • Installed the latest Redist of Microsoft Visual C++
  • Went into Bios and disabled any OC profiles to confirm that wasn't an issue
  • Followed a bunch of advice given by SquareEnix support, none of it helped: things like opening ports, checking browser settings, making sure nothing else is running, etc.

I'm probably forgetting something...

Here is what I did that did work and provided stability:

  • Set the in-game settings from High (Desktop) to Normal (Desktop)

Upon testing for a while to make sure the game was not crashing anymore, I then set the settings back to High and experienced the error shortly afterward. Playing in normal settings is not a solution, though, as I experienced the error yesterday even while on Normal settings, but it was the first error in over a week of relative stability.

Here is my link to the official bug report on the SquareEnix forums:

Here is a link to the previous thread on these forums going over this error:

https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-ARC-Graphics/Intel-Arc-A770-Fatal-DirectX-Error-in-FFXIV/m-p/1684755#M23896

I really am just hoping for a solution. The hardware I'm using should easily be able to run FFXIV without issue, it handled Baldur's Gate 3 well enough. This error only happens in FFXIV. I'm inclined to agree it is the game and the in-game graphic settings, but I'm wondering if it is because of the age of the game (it was released back in 2013 with the recent expansion being from last year) and Intel Arc being about only 3 years old or so.

Hi @Drangueforde,

We have thoroughly investigated the issue and determined that it is isolated to the game itself, affecting all Final Fantasy XIV expansions. At this point, our best approach is to test the game using our latest driver, version 32.0.101.6881 (WHQL Certified), and ensure you use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) during the process. Based on your detailed troubleshooting steps, it’s clear you have done an excellent job so far.

If the issue persists, the final option would be to wait for the game developer to release a fix. Rest assured, I will also coordinate this recurring issue internally to gather additional insights. It seems that a BIOS update serves only as a temporary workaround for this title. I will keep you updated as soon as I have more information.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Hello,

I was waiting to hear back from SquareEnix about the matter. I received the following message from them in-game, which I took screenshots of and will share in the attachments here.

They claim they were unable to replicate the error in their testing, but you were able to do so and so was I on several different occasions. I sent the bug report in again with a link to this thread informing them of your ability to replicate the error as well as encouraged them to contact you to work together and find a solution.

I'd appreciate it if you reached out to them and shared your information with them about replicating the error and other relevant details. You can provide your information on a bug report of your own on their forums and submit it via the bug report on this website, I'll include both methods for you:

https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/forums/632-In-Game-Bugs

https://support.na.square-enix.com/form.php?id=5382&la=1&p=0&fo=90045

I used both methods myself. I also updated the BIOS again and updated the GPU drivers, I'll conduct more testing tomorrow. Feel free to see if you can replicate the error again as well. Perhaps together we can get the matter to receive the attention it deserves. Thank you and I hope you have a good day.

Hi @Drangueforde,

Let me check internally if we can do something about your request in collaboration with the game developers for troubleshooting. I will report back to you once I have an update on this.

I appreciate it. Thank you.

I'm still able to replicate the error, even after the most updated BIOS and drivers.

Hi @Drangueforde,

We have thoroughly investigated this matter and determined that it is a recurring issue affecting not only the game itself but also third-party GPUs. This has been corroborated by various sources, including:

Given the nature of this issue, we recommend reaching out directly to the game developer for further support and potential solutions as this is solely isolated on the game itself. You can contact them through the following link: Final Fantasy XIV Support.

I will proceed with closing this case. Please note that it will no longer be monitored. Thank you for understanding.
