custom resolution not working using CRU

I use an older Acer (GN246HL) monitor that only allows higher refresh rates through DVI dual link. I'm using the DisplayPort out to an active adaptor so I can get higher refresh rates, but I get no "advanced settings" in the Arc Control setting for custom resolutions. If I use CRU to set up a custom resolution, the resolution doesn't become available after driver restart. If I use an HDMI to DVI dual link adaptor I get a "wrong cable" message (although it now works at 120 Hz). I've seen a few responses to similar issues, but no resolution to my problem.

Download the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) and extract the zip.

Run CRU.exe.

Choose your display from the drop-down list at the top of the window.

Under “Standard Resolutions”, click on Add.

A “Standard Resolution” window will appear with a preset resolution.

Update: the new driver (4255) seems to have given me 120Hz, but that's it. Still no "advanced settings" in custom resolutions, still no ability to set a custom refresh rate through CRU.

In order to better assist you, please provide the following:  


1. Are you using a laptop or desktop computer? What is the model of your laptop or motherboard (if desktop)?

2. What is the model of your graphics card?

3. What is the operating system installed and the version and build?

4. What is the refresh rate that you want to set?

5. Were you able to see the option before?

Hi Deivid.

 

1) Desktop computer. ASRock X99 Taichi

2) Intel ARC A750

3) Windows 10 Pro version 22H2 build 19045.2728

4) 144 Hz (should be possible but I can't get the option to try without CRU)

5) I have never seen the option for "advanced settings" in the custom resolution portion of ARC Command Center. It was just something I read about in the forums. I only get options for setting width and height.

Thanks for the confirmation. Before we continue further, I would like to confirm the following:


1. Did you update the monitor firmware?

2. Did you update the BIOS version (1.80)?

3. Did you run all Windows optional updates?

4. Did you update the graphics card drivers?

5. Can you test with a straight connection, with no adapters (adapters can limit the GFX card features)?

6. Are you able to change the frequency from the Windows settings?

Hi Deivid.

 

1 - 4) all bios, firmware and drivers latest revision (bios is beta 1.82 however it's been beta for years and it has microcode updates, shouldn't run without it in my opinion). Windows options are up to date although I don't use all options.

 

5) The only straight connection I can use is HDMI, and my monitor will not accept anything over 60 Hz from HDMI (just not a great monitor for newer GPUs). The connection works but at 60 Hz. It matters little to me if CRU works at that point because I won't be able to set a different refresh. I would go direct from a DVI-D port but the ARC A750 doesn't have one. I either use the adapter or I need a new monitor.

 

6) I can change the frequency in Windows settings, I'm just limited to 120 or 60Hz.

Hi Deivid, just wanted to update you that CRU and 144 Hz seem to work fine now. I've marked the issue as resolved, it could be a number of things on my end or a change in the ARC driver implementation. Thanks for your efforts and have a great day!

Download the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) and extract the zip.

Run CRU.exe.

Choose your display from the drop-down list at the top of the window.

Under “Standard Resolutions”, click on Add.

A “Standard Resolution” window will appear with a preset resolution.

Hey Mitchel, thanks for the input. That method didn't work as I can't type 144 Hz in the text box, the "ok" button is greyed out. I can now however set the refresh in the "detailed resolution" section. No idea why that works now. I hesitate to call the issue "resolved" but there may be a problem at my end other users aren't experiencing. Anyways I'll mark your reply as a solution since it's the closest thing and I can end the adventure temporarily. Cheers.

Hello i have the exact same problem, i have tried multiple different cables from dvi to displayport to hdmi. Cant seem to find the issue. Ever since i put in a new gpu it refuses to show the 144hz option anyway. Hopefully i can get some help?

I'm not sure it's the same issue if you're not using an active adaptor. My video runs from displayport to DVI-d using an active adaptor, as a passive one only supports 60 Hz at 1080p (usually), and my monitor only supports 144 Hz through DVI-d. The passive ones are basically meant for laptops. I can try to help you track this down but don't be surprised if a moderator asks you to move this to a more appropriate topic.

 

Info I'm missing here is what kind of monitor you're using, which OS, and what GPU were you using before, or is it integrated onto the processor? Maybe I can help you scare up some info that might help.

I use the exact same monitor as you the GN246HL, a gtx 1650 super and windows 10. I tried multiple display ports, hdmi’s (which i found out probably wont stream the 144hz) and dual link.
