PresentMonService high CPU and memory usag

PresentMonService high CPU and memory usage While playing a game, I noticed PresentMonService (consuming high resources), and I casually clicked "Create dump file" for it in Task Manager (https://1drv.ms/u/c/2510f34c636fb91c/IQAy0z7WpHFfSaabgZIZGAj3AaWSlmjHoxwRBaxxIn1dxZI?e=TeR1VC). Afterwards, when I checked again, the process was gone. I'd like to ask what's going on with this usage?

Hey!

Great catch, and honestly a super interesting one — don't worry, you haven't broken anything! Let me try to shed some light on what's likely going on here.

PresentMonService is actually a background performance monitoring service — it's tied to Intel's PresentMon telemetry framework, which tracks frame timing, GPU/CPU usage, and game performance metrics under the hood. It's commonly bundled with Intel Graphics drivers or tools like Intel Arc Control / Intel Graphics Command Center.

The reason it disappeared after you created the dump file is actually pretty normal behaviour — creating a dump file can sometimes cause the process to detect the memory snapshot event and self-terminate gracefully, or it may have simply completed its monitoring cycle right around that time. Either way, it's not a crash — more of a coincidence in timing!

That said, the high CPU and memory usage part is definitely worth digging into a little more. A few quick things I'd love to know:

Thanks for sharing the dump file link too — that's genuinely helpful context if this needs to go further!

Which Intel graphics driver version are you on? (You can check via Device Manager → Display Adapters → Driver Details, or through Intel Arc Control / Intel Graphics Command Center)

What GPU are you running? — Intel Arc dedicated, Intel integrated graphics, or a hybrid setup with a discrete GPU as well?

How high are we talking on the resource usage? — Roughly what % CPU and how much RAM was it consuming when you noticed it?

Is this happening consistently every gaming session, or was it a one-time thing?

Do you have Intel Arc Control, Intel Graphics Command Center, or any Intel overlay tools installed? That'll help narrow down exactly what's triggering PresentMonService to spin up.

Let's figure out whether this is a one-off blip or something that needs a closer look on the driver side. Either way, we've got you covered!

Hey there,

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. Here are the specifics you asked for:

  • Driver Version: 32.0.101.8974 (dated 2026/08/11).
  • GPU: Intel B580.
  • Resource Usage: CPU(intel 230f) was around 10%, and memory was roughly 400MB.
  • Frequency: Not very frequent — I've only noticed it about 2 or 3 times so far.
  • Software: I have Intel Graphics Software installed, but I do not have the overlay (or any performance layer) enabled.

Let me know if you need me to run any additional diagnostics or collect log files. Thanks!
