Studio Display XDR EDID issues

When connecting to Studio Display XDR, either by Thunderbolt 5 from motherboard to display, or Nexhype DP/USB-A combo to USB-C cable from Arc B580 to display, I can get 5120x2880 and 120hz but no HDR. Windows is reporting that this is a generic non-PnP monitor. I’ve tried injecting EDID with CRU, but I can’t get it to show up as anything besides blank or “Internal” in Intel Graphics Software. IGS says HDR support is “enabled” but windows will not show me any option to switch to it, and Windows+Alt+B says display does not support HDR. I’m using Intel arc driver version 8801. Every other feature of the monitor seems to work aside from HDR. Anyone have luck getting it working?

Please generate a System Support Utility Log, and attach the output file here. We can then analyze it.

Dear jesterjay743,

I sincerely regret the inconvenience this situation may have caused and appreciate your patience as we work toward a resolution.

To assist you more effectively, I would like to gather a few additional details:

  1. Could you please provide the exact brand and model of the Thunderbolt 5 device you are using? If possible, kindly include a link.
  2. Additionally, could you provide the exact model of the Nexhype DP/USB-A combo to USB-C cable? If available, please include a link as well.

We look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Same problem on an integrated Intel Arc 140V (Core Ultra 7 268V, ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13, Thunderbolt 4, Windows 11 25H2) with the
Studio Display XDR:
drivers 32.0.101.8724 and newer read no EDID at all (Default_Monitor, only a synthesized 3840x2160), drivers up to 32.0.101.8508 fall back to MS_0001 so an EDID_OVERRIDE gives 5120x2880@120 with DSC. HDR is never exposed to Windows on any driver even though the driver itself reports the HDR feature flag via IGCL and the sink's DPCD advertises VSC SDP colorimetry.
Full report with DPCD dump, EDID, DisplayConfig/IGCL results and driver matrix here: https://community.intel.com/t5/Graphics/Apple-Studio-Display-XDR-2026-on-Intel-Arc-140V-Lunar-Lake-over/m-p/1758198#M153391

Update from the Arc 140V / ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 side. The driver boundary is unchanged: 32.0.101.8724 and newer deliver no EDID for this display over the Thunderbolt/USB4 tunnel, while 8332/8508 still give the MS_0001 fallback that an EDID_OVERRIDE can attach to. One correction to my post above: HDR is not always unavailable. On 8508 the driver has switched by itself three times (each after a second USB4 host behind the display briefly re-linked) to a state where the monitor devnode becomes DISPLAY\APPAE42, DSC is no longer used (5120x2880 only up to 60 Hz, 8 bpc) and Windows offers HDR, which then works. An adapter restart returns to 5120x2880 @ 120 Hz with DSC and no HDR. I cannot trigger it on demand. Measurements are in my two threads on the Intel Community Graphics board. A warning for anyone pinning an older driver: on my laptop a Windows cumulative update (KB5124008) re-assigned a newer Intel driver from the local driver store despite ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate=1; deleting those packages from the store (pnputil /delete-driver) prevents that.

One more update to my post above. After a resume from Modern Standby (display firmware 26.4, driver 32.0.101.8508, no second host attached) the laptop came back in the same DISPLAY\APPAE42 state, but this time with DSC kept, and Windows HDR now runs at 5120x2880 @ 120 Hz, 10 bpc. So HDR at the display's full resolution and refresh rate over Thunderbolt 4 is possible with 8508; the driver's state decides it, not DSC or bandwidth. I cannot trigger that state on demand yet. Details are in my two threads on the Intel Community Graphics board.

Follow-up for everyone in this thread: there is a working workaround, and it is a single registry value in the
Intel driver.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\<NNNN>
(the subkey whose DriverDesc names your Intel GPU)
DisableDisplayId2Support = REG_DWORD 1

then reboot (restarting the display adapter is enough). It tells the driver to stop using the standalone
"Native DisplayID 2.x" read path, after which it reads the display's normal EDID.

I tested it on an Arc 140V (Core Ultra 7 268V, Studio Display XDR over Thunderbolt 4):

- the monitor node changes from DISPLAY\MS_0001 (or DISPLAY\Default_Monitor with NOEDID on newer drivers)
to DISPLAY\APPAE42 with the display's own 768-byte EDID, so no EDID override is needed any more,
- 5120x2880 @ 120.04 Hz with HDR and 10 bpc, DSC on,
- same result on driver 32.0.101.8508 and on 32.0.101.8724, which without the flag reads no descriptor at all.

The idea came from the NVIDIA side, where the same display needed DISABLE_NATIVE_DISPLAYID2X_SUPPORT = 1
(https://github.com/yangyinxu/studio-display-xdr-hdr-workaround); Intel's driver turned out to have its own
equivalent switch.

I cannot test a discrete Arc card myself. If someone here has a B580 with this display, please try the value
under your card's class subkey and post the result - it would be useful to know whether the same path is
involved on discrete Arc, and it strengthens the case for a proper driver fix. The full write-up, with the
before/after measurements and the DDC reads, is in the "Apple Studio Display XDR (2026) on Intel Arc 140V /
Lunar Lake over Thunderbolt 4" thread in Intel Graphics.
