We currently have what I believe is the latest Fortran compiler: Update 8, v 2011.8.278, including IMSL lib.
We are using Visual Studio 2005 on Windows 7. Is VS 2005 a good option, or should we update to a later version of VS ?

I would recommend Visual Studio 2010. As indicated in the Fortran release notes, we will be dropping VS2005 support in the next major release of the compiler. VS2010 works better on Windows 7 than VS2005, anyway.

What are the advantages of VS2010, other than the fact that VS2005 won't be supported in the future? We are considering upgrading, although that is driven more by a change from MS Visual SourceSafe to Team Foundation Server for version control. Any surprises we should be aware of beforehand?

The main advantage for Fortran users is all of the new source editor features we enabled for VS2010, including "Source Browser" and more. On Windows 7, VS2005 has to be run "As Administrator" or else it won't work properly. VS2008 and VS2010 don't have that problem.
Other than these differences, there's not really much for the Fortran user. Nowadays I use VS2010 as my preferred environment, though I also have VS2005 and 2008 installed.

Purchase of current versions entitles you to download and use of older ones as well.
