Installing Fortran Compiler in Windows 7 64 bit.

I am trying to install the Intel Fortran Compiler for IA32 and Intel 64 on a Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium operating system on a Compaq Presario computer. The machine has 4 Gbyte memory installed.

The installation was unsuccessful. The first attempt, the download was
corrupted (after 3 hours download to the university). The second

download appeared to be ok, the installer tried to install but then said a MS
program (cannot remember which one. MV or V something I think) was not
available.

Then got the message "Error 1310 doesn't have access to C:\\config.ms\\4d7dd4.rbf and then it rolled back the install. What on earth do we do now??

I tried to re-install to try to get the error message again but was not given the install option. I tried Repair and the system implied that this was successful but no sign of the compiler on the desktop or in programs. If one goes to system to use the remove programs option the compiler does not show up.

I then tried the remove option and part way though get the message that it did not have access to c:\\config.ms\\... (not the same file but similar) and then rolled back the uninstall.

I contacted the local Intel Agent (Hoare Research) in New Zealand who suggested some .pdf files to look at.

Having read the .pdf file, I still do not know what is missing in order
to set up the compiler. As I indicated earlier I tried to remove the
program (one of the options of the downloaded program and this failed.
The only options I have if I run the program again is

modify, repair or remove.

I know the repair and remove do not work and if I run repair it again completes
but there is NO desktop reference to the compiler and it does not show
under "PROGRAMS". There are no other options available on the install.
There is also nothing about "design studio" in the download even though
the download was that which was supposed to all the bits associated with
it. (1st download option on the Intel download site).

The only executables I can find is in the following directory (similar
under directory \\em64t\\ instead of \\ia32\\
\\Program
Files(x86)\\intel\\compiler\\11.1\\060\\mkl\\benchmarks\\mp_linpack\\bin_intel\\ia32\\xhp_ia32.exe

which does not run as it saysimpi.dll is not on computer.

If I go to 'Control Panel' to try to remove the program (compiler) it
does not show in the list of installed programs. So I cannot start the
install again to get the original error message.

We did ask what other things did we need to run the compiler.

I am now at a total loss as to where to go to next!!!!!

Dear Customer,

What exactly is the Intel Fortran Compiler package you downloaded? Pls. specify the package name, e.g. w_cprof_p_11.1.060_intel64.exe.

Do you have a Microsoft Visual Studio envrionment already installed on your computer or do you want to use the Visual Studio 2008 Shell (VS08 Shell) that's included in the Intel Visual Fortran Compiler Academic package?

If you have a Microsoft Visual Studio version installed on your computer which is the version (and service pack)?

Regards,
Hubert.

The download was w_cprof_P_11.1.060.exe. The first attempted download (corrupted was w_cprof_P_11.1.054 and these were supposed to have Visual Studio Shell included. This was the version for IA 32 and Intel 64. This is the first listed download (800+ MByte) on the Intel download site However, there is no option to install the shell separately and the install did not mention it. However, I cannot now run the install (only options are modify, repair or remove and the repair doesn't help and the remove doesn't work). I cannot remove what is there (not visible) and so at the moment I have paid for a download that I cannot do anything with.

We did ask the agents (RS New Zealand) what else we needed to run the compiler and were informed that all we needed was included. The only help that they seem to be able to supply is get access to this forum.

The fileset W_CPROF_P_11.1.060.EXE is the newest full package including all platforms and the VS2008 Shell.

First of all, pls. verify the checksum and filesize of the downloaded package that should be:

3890104357 920249504 W_CPROF_P_11.1.060.EXE

I'm investigating with Windows 7 64-bit what could be the problem and I'll post a message asap.

Hubert.

I couldn't find any issue or problems when installing the Intel Visual Fortran Compiler 11.1 in a fresh Windows 7 64-bit environment.

What did you perform, a Custom installation or Full installateion (default)?

Do you have a Visual Studio already on your system? If yes, which version and type (e.g. Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite or so).

If you have a supported VS on your computer you should integrate the IVF into that rather than installing the Visual Studio 2008 Shell that is being installed by default (Full installation) by the IVF installer.

If 'Full installation' you should see all IVF components being installed on your system (via Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program):

- Intel Visual Fortran Compiler Professional Edition 11.1.060 Update 5 for Windows*
- Microsoft Tools and Libraries for Intel Visual Fortran
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Remote Debugger - ENU
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Shell (integrated mode) - ENU

If you performed a 'Custom installation' and excluded parts of the components (e.g. the VS2008 Shell) from the install, you will not see all of them.

In order to update, re-install or change the configuration you should choose 'Modify' option. Then you will see the selection dialog again (same as if you did a Custom installation) where you can select and de-select components for (un)installation.

Which of the components from the Control Panel did you try to remove? What exaclty happened and what was the error message?

Why do you think did a repair not work?

BTW: We have very nice knowledgebase articlesthatmay be of much help:

It was a full install. Visual studio is NOT on this system, I had an earlier version on an older computer but not on this system. This is why we purchased the vesion that is supposed to include the VS shell.

The repair did not work in that there is no sign of the compiler anywhere on the system apart from some directories with the MKL libraries and documenation. There is a directory labelled "compiler" but no compiler present.

The Repair option showed no compiler, om the desktop or programs and when trying to remove programs from the systems area the compiler or anything else associated with it does not appear as installed systems.

I have tried to use tjhe modify option with the download and this fails because ity cannot find Visual Studio. I get the message that an error has occurred with

c:\Program Files(x86)\Intel\downloads\w_cprof_p_11.1.060\installs\1033\arp-creator.msi

I'd advise to remove manually from your system what's left over after several trials of 'Modif', 'Reapir'and 'Remove'.

From the Control Panel remove all of the following (via Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program):

- Intel Visual Fortran Compiler Professional Edition 11.1.060 Update 5 for Windows*
- Microsoft Tools and Libraries for Intel Visual Fortran
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Remote Debugger - ENU
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Shell (integrated mode) - ENU

Then remove the following folders completely (if there's anything left after uninstallation):

- C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Compiler
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0

Then try re-installation again by running:

- C:\Program Files (x86)\Intel\Download\w_cprof_p_11.1.060\setup.exe

and choose 'Full installation'. The license should have been installed already and so you may choose 'Use existing license'; otherwise search for the license file or perform a remote activation.

To be sure that all files in the Download folder are correct you may extract the downloaded fileset again by running:

- w_cprof_p_11.1.060.exe

prior to instalaltion (have you checked the checksum and filesize of the downloaded file? I gave you the data in this forum thread)

Having done a full installation you should see the following under Start > All Programs:

- Intel Software Development Tools
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2008

You can start ifort in a console under Intel Software Development Tools > Intel Visual Fortran Compiler Professional > Fortran Build Environment for applications ....

Or you can start the VS2008 GUI from

Start > Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 > Microsoft Visuals Studio

Follow the Getting Started Guide (availalbe from Start > Intel Software Development Tools > Intel Visual Fortran Compiler Professional) to check if you can build Fortran code.

If you still encounter issues I strongly recommend to read all the troubleshooting and Q&A guides where I gave you the links already. These are very comprehensive and helpful guides and cover all common issues on IVF installation and VS2008 integration.

The downloads directory under program Files(x86)\Intel\download\w_cprof_P_11.1.060\ has sub-directories

1033, 1041,fli,fnp,installs,licenses and Plugin

Under "Control panel" "Programs" "remove" the only application found was Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 remote debugger and I removed this. None of the other programs appeared. I also deleted the Program files(x86) Intel compiler directory.

I have found my earlier Visual Studio 2005 and installed this. It appears to have been successful though I had to download service packs and in stall them.

If I try to run the setup.exe from the downloads I am only given the options of "Modify" "Repair" or "Remove".

Using the Modify option to install the compiler it fails with a message that it cget access to (appears to network) ....\. , I cannot save the message and do not know where it is trying to go.

I am then told Error while installing "C:\Program Files(x86)\Intel\Downloads\w_cprof_p_11.1.060\Installs\1033\arp_creator\arp_creator.msi"

The install is un successful.

If i look at the directories I have documentaion and parts of the MKL libraries but still no compiler and if I search installed programs nothing shows for today, the last was the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 that I installed yesterday.

The download w_cprof_p_11.1.060.exe is 898,682 KB in size.

The downloads directory under Program Files(x86)\Intel\download\w_cprof_P_11.1.060\ has sub-directories

1033, 1041, fli, fnp, installs, licensesm plugin

The downloads directory under program Files(x86)\Intel\compile has sub-directory 11.1 with a sub-directory 060 which has sub-directories "documentation" and "mkl"

"documentaion" has sub-directories "en-US" and "jp_JP" and each of these has a further sub-directory "mkl"

Program Files(x86)\Intel\download\w_cprof_P_11.1.060\mkl has sub-directories

benchmark, examples, ia32, include, interfaces, tests and tools.

No options to do an "install" with either new or existing license number. The question nevere comes up.

If the Intel Fortran Compiler (or parts of it) are already on the computer, another start of the installer comes up with these three options 'Modify', 'Repair', 'Remove'; that's ok. But it seems that there is some mismatch on your system. Your install tree is not complete. At this point the repair tool may help to clean your installation.

Please go to

http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/troubleshooting-fortran-integration-issues-with-visual-studio/

and download the VS2008 Repair Tool from the bottom of this article.

Run the tool and if it's successful, run the Intel Fortran Compiler installer again. However, this time you may de-select the VS08 Shell install if you want to use your VS2005 installation and Intel Fortran Compiler integration into VS2005 instead of the VS2008 Shell.

Hubert.

Tried the VS2008 repair tool. Not successful, message:

"Error while opening VS2008 registry key

The system cannot find the file specified

Press any key to exit program"

Remove Intel directory tree from ":Program Files(x86)"

recopied the fortran download on to the system and ran it again

Still only allowed "Modify, Repair or Remove" REpair sid successful, I have all MKL stuff but no compiler.

Checked install programs in control panel and no sign of compiler, or in fact any Intel software.

Ran "modify" and requested install compiler. again failed with error message

"Error 1606 Could not access networklocation \."

Not sure where to go next!!! We are no further ahead than I was about 3 weeks ago.

Can I ask a few simple questions? First, the user under which you run the installation - is this an Administrative priviledged user account? Second, do you have any antivirius software on the system? If so, what make and version and does this version explicitly support Windows 7?

thanks

I have seen this same sort of error on Win7 with products from various vendors, though never yet with the Intel compilers. I suggest the following:

Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, run it and, if you see Intel Visual Fortran referenced, uninstall it.

Locate the Program Files (x86)\Intel\Download\w_cprof_p_11.1.060 folder (or the one with _novsshell or _ia32 if that's what you downloaded). Temporarily disable any antivirus product. Right click on setup.exe and select "Start as Administrator".

Let us know if that helps.
