Having just purchased and downloaded Fortran, I've attempted to launch Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and get the following error message:
An unhandled win32 exception occurred in devenv.exe[5396]
Can you help me?

I find it curious that two of you at the same school are having the identical problem. Do you already have Microsoft Visual Studio installed on this system? What is the filename of the download you used to install Fortran and where did you get it from? Which edition of Windows are you running?
I suppose at this point I would suggest downloading and installing the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, running it and removing both Intel Visual Fortran and Microsoft Visual Studio. Reboot. Delete the Program FilesIntelCompiler folder and the Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 9 folder. Download w_cprof_p_11.1.051.exe from the Intel Registration Center and run that to install.

That's not normal - it suggests that either the installation is corrupted or that there is something on your system that is interfering with the Visual Studio launch.
Did you install the package that includes Visual Studio 2008 Shell or did you already have Visual Studio 2008 on the system?
First thing I would suggest is to run the repair tool attached to this article. If you are on Windows 7 or Windows Vista, right click on the EXE and select "Start as Administrator". If that does not fix the problem, uninstall Intel Visual Fortran and Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Shell (assuming that you have that), then reinstall. Let me know what happens.

Thanks. I suppose I installed the package that includes Visual Studio 2008 Shell, since I'm not aware that I already had it on the system. I see the zip file included with your response but cannot open it or save it onto my computer. Am I missing something?

Ok so I managed to access the file you provided it, and ran it. This did not fix the problem. Then I tried to uninstall, as you suggested. But the effort to uninstall failed! I got a message to the effect: A program required for installation to complete could not be run. Now what?

Thanks for your continuing help. To clarify, Natalia and I purchased Fortran at the same time. She downloaded her version onto her laptop with no problem; she's involved with this problem only because she's helping me try to resolve the problem in downloading onto my desktop.
I believe I DID NOT have Visual Studio installed on my machine prior to my order.
The filename of the download I used is exactly what you are suggesting to download: w_cprof_p_11.1.051.exe. I got it from the registration center, which I accessed following an email message I received verifying my order. The relavant aspect of the information I received is:
Product: Intel Visual Fortran Compiler Professional Edition for Windows* with IMSL*
Download
I am running Windows XP, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
I will attempt to follow your new instructions.
Thanks again
