I am choosing CPU's for a Fortran-dedicated computing environment. How comparable are the GHz counts of P4's and Xeons and what kind of influence would the motherboard have? Basically I am choosing between 6 single P4 desktops vs 2 dual Xeon workstations (the cost seems rougly equal).
Ie, can a 2.8GHz Xeon with a workstation motherboard outperform a 3.2GHz P4 (1mb L2 cache)in a desktop say, by more than 50%, and under what circumstances (if any)? I am looking essentially at pure arithmetic Fortran code. Would the comparison change muchif I was to use linux for the OS?
many thanks, D.
