Why cant I search the fortran compiler users guide?

I get this cryptic error message

"cannot find searchdata.js" data base.

Furthermore I cannot scroll the left pane.

How would I get a list Of functions and subroutines?

The users guide does not give me that option.

It used to, though - -

Actually, I have this problem when trying to access the users guide from within the Visual studio.

If I copy the URL and access it elsewhere, I dont get the same behavior.

from within the Visual Studio, its trying to use that Microsoft EDGE,

so maybe that is related to this. I get good results with Google Chrome for the browser.

We'll take a look to see if there's a problem with Edge.

OK - I am not sure whether there is a problem with the interaction between VS and Edge, or a problem with just the browser (?).

Another question: since I work just only Fortran (I have the latest version), is there any good reason to install a later version of VS?

Right now it uses the 2010 VS "shell." I get the impression that the VS designers did not really intend VS to be a main component

when working with Fortran.

So I am somewhat concerned that going to a later version of VS might put me "out of business."

Maybe someone can advise me what the latest version should be. I have windows 10 on both my PCs, Fortran 16.0 also.

VS2010 works fine for now. There's no reason to change it at this time. Version 16 provides a VS2013 Shell environment, but it won't be installed if you have VS2010.

My guess is that your documentation problem is an issue with how Edge processes the search feature in a "HTML Help" document. We'll check it out.

I tried it on my end. The left pane is frozen, i.e. I cant scroll it, and cannot do a search either.

so, the problem seems to be with the EDGE browser.

I tried Edge with the 2016 Update 1 install. I have no problems searching or scrolling the left pane. I'm not sure what to suggest to you other than to use Chrome for this, though you might try an uninstall and reinstall of Fortran to see if that corrects the missing file error.

If you can scroll, you can find lists of intrinsics under A to Z Reference > Language Summary Tables. There you'll find subsections by class of intrinsic.

Were you doing that with Windows 10?

I was wondering if that could be the source of the problem,

some weird kind of interaction (?).

One can't use Edge and not use Windows 10.

OK, I didnt know that -

Is there a version of EDGE for a MAC?

I use those sometimes.

No - Edge is ONLY on Windows 10 at this time. Even on Windows 10, I set my default browser to Chrome as Edge lacks too many features I depend on (add-ins such as password managers and ad blockers, for example).

You are not alone with searchdata.js problems...

I have the same problem on Windows 10 with Edge, cannot find searchdata.js and help basically unusable.

Installed on Windows 10, VS 2015 Up1 Community with C++, Composer 2016 Upd 1, Edge default browser.  Same software with Win 7 and chrome is ok.

Solution for me on Win10 machine was to go into system, settings, and make Chrome default broweser, then Composer 2016 help works again.

I will never get used to saying/typing Composer, instead of Fortran.  Product marketing managers are a mystery...
