append data to an existing file

Hi,
As I tried to open an existing file and append more data to it using the following clause, I met open file error.
OPEN(25, FILE='DD.dat', ACTION='WRITE', STATUS='OLD', & POSITION='APPEND', IOSTAT=OPENSTATUS)
The OPENSTATUS showed me a positive value, 30. The file can't be opened. If I deleted POSITION='APPEND', then the file could be opened.
My operating system is Windows XP home edition, and it is visual fortran 6.0.
Did anybody meet this kind of problem before? and could give me a reply?
Thanks for your time.
Best

Try:
open (25, file = 'DD.dat', status = 'unknown', access = 'append')
