comment on toggling view output bar efficiently

under CVF (here we go again, sorry), compiling/building a file would bring up the output bar with diagnostics. hitting 'esc' would remove that bar to free up the screen. there was also a 'view output button' that would toggle the view. This was very convenient (see below)

can I achieve the same in the new IDE? The 'output' button only brings up the bar (doesnt hide it). Setting auto-hide makes the bar disappear if I click outside it (eg, in the source file), but I often need to look at both the output bar and be able to move around the source file during debugging. Is it another option that 'came free' in 6 and now needs to be enabled?

a similar comment applies for solution explorer - it seems impossible to toggle it using the solution explorer button.

thanks.
