I'm trying to write a general and portable subroutine that should identify as accurate as possible the system name/type were is executed (currently I'm using CVF6.5 under WindowsNT4.0). Can anybody help me with some examples?

Using only standard Fortran, no. If you have a certain set of target systems/compilers in mind there might be a solution though.
