Since I installed Windows XP my Fortran compiler is freezing with an increased frequency. I get a white screen with the message program not responding in the task manager. It recovers after a minute. Anybody know a tweak that will prevent this?

My guess is that your boot disk is so full that the pagefile can't expand, and the OS starts "pagefile thrashing". Clean up the disk, and/or set up a pagefile on another disk (right click on My Computer, properties, advanced, performance, virtual memory).
