Is it safe to update BIOS

I am sorry if i have posted this question in wrong category
here is my question
i have a laptop hp processor intel celeron 2.4GHz, now when i boot my laptop from external drive connected to usb drive.it is not detecting that drive. i discussed with hardware person and he suggest me to update bios from HP website. but i m afraid as if any prob will arise than i might be in trouble. looking for solution.

Sorry, this forum is for discussing HPC (High Performance Computing) and Cluster software, not Hewlett-Packard PCs. I suggest you start at HP's web site and look for support forums.
