NUC7i3BNH Issue with HDMI Audio Out

Hi there.

I've come across an annoying issue where the HDMI video is fine but the audio doesn't seem to work on a Samsung UN32EH5300 when paired with a NUC7i3BNH. The audio on the TV has worked fine with both a PS3 and a PS4 as well as an older NUC, the D34010WYKH.

Swapping for a different brand of cable did nothing however switching to different TVs (Samsung HPT5064X/XAC and Sony KDL-37XBR6) did show the audio from the NUC7i3BNH working fine on them.

OS: Ubuntu Mate 16.10

Bios: bnkbl357.86a.0036.2017.0105.1112

I assume this is a bios issue but was wondering if there's anything else I can try.

Hello:

Thank you very much to agariowun for the comments above.

To rdmadeira:

Based on the fact that the HDMI audio works fine with a different TV it means that the NUC is working fine and so is the HDMI cable, and it seems this could be a compatibility issue. Since you already did a BIOS update to the latest version another thing to do if you have the option will be to get a high quality HDMI 2.0 cable and test it with the TV.

I was checking the specifications of the TV and it does not show the HDMI revision that it has, but the 2.0 revision is the latest, so that is always an option to try:

http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN32EH5300FXZA-specs http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/UN32EH5300FXZA-specs

Also, since you are using Ubunto, on the following link you might be able to find some graphics drivers for that operating system, since the drivers that we have in our web site belong to Windows, and remember that the audio and video for HDMI are included on the graphics driver, so you can try that as well:

https://01.org/ https://01.org/

Also, you can visit the following site, it is for Linux support, in there you will find further peer's assistance and suggestions to try to fix this problem:

http://ubuntuforums.org/ http://ubuntuforums.org/

Another step to do will be to get in contact directly with Samsung, to confirm if maybe there is a firmware update on the TV, in some case after trying that the problem with the audio gets fixed:

Samsung's phone number: 1 800-726-7864

Samsung's support site: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ http://www.samsung.com/us/support/

Any further questions, please let me know.

Regards

Alberto

Hey folks,

since I am in the same situation (upgraded from D34010WYKH to NUC7i3BNH) I can tell you there might be an issue with Pulseaudio at Ubuntu 16.10. I didn't get it managed to use more than 2ch (stereo) over HDMI, so I ended up with disabling Pulseaudio and used ALSA. Maybe it will work out for you as well - I linked the How-To below:

Hello rdmadeira:

Thank you very much for providing those details.

Since you are using Ubunto, to get support with that operating system the best thing to do is trying the forums as you did on the link above, while waiting for their answer I just wanted to let you know that Intel tested the NUC with Windows, so based on that, is there any chance that for testing purposes you can install Windows on the NUC and let us know if the problem persists?

To Möhre:

Are you using Windows?

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards

Alberto:

I tried Win10 with the latest drivers and everything worked fine. Looks like the issue is linux only.

Hello rdmadeira:

Thank you very much for letting us know those results.

It is great hear the NUC works with no problem when you use Windows, Intel tested the NUC that way, so yes, it seems to be the problem is related to Linux itself.

I am having this same issue with Windows 10. The OS does not see the audio device. I am at the latest updates for both drivers and OS and have tried multiple tvs my home theater amp where it really needs to work and I have also tried multiple hdmi cables. I am at a loss and this is extremely frustrating. Anyone having the same problem with Windows?

I have exactly the same issue with on a NUC 7i5BNK with Windows 10 v1709 x64 installed.

Updated the BIOS, latest drivers, HDMI 2.0 update, updated the TV and the sound bar firmware, nothing seems to work. My former NUC 5i5RYK gave perfectly 5.1 audio but the 7i5BNK only outputs 2.0 and with extra issues like sometimes no audio in games, and sometimes it does. I also have KODI installed, is there an option in there which I should consider changing? Or do you know another solution?

Alberto:

I tried your suggestions, but no joy. The TV should have the 1.4 HDMI rev. as the 2.0 spec wasn't officially released released till 2013, a year after the TV was sold. I checked and the firmware is up to date. Still checking the forums of the two sites you mentioned but have yet to find anything useful.

One thing odd thing that I discovered is that while there is no sound initially, if I let the DPMS kick in and wake it back up then I do get sound.

Agariowun :

I tried the the 4.10 rc8 kernel release which should have the latest drivers and there was no change. Also tried it under 17.04 alpha and the problem still persisted.

Hello rdmadeira,

I am having same exact issue here. I have Intel NUC7i3BNH and in ubuntu 16.04 audio over hdmi does not work for some TVs (such as: Samsung UN46EH5300F) but works for some TVs (such as: Asus VE247H monitor). Were you able to solve the issue?

Thanks in advance.

Same issue here with TV UN46EH5300 and and Linux Mint 18.3 on NUC7i3BNH

No idea so far. I see the Output Device HDMI Audio in the system, but I hear nothing.

BIOS update did not help

For us to further assist you and to help you with the specific problem, please create a new thread, make sure to add all the details in regard to your system. This way the next agent will have a better look at your specific scenario, you can add this thread as a reference but I recommend creating a new thread in order to isolate your case.
