The capacity shown in the Windows* operating system for the Intel® Optane™ memory series module is much less 13GB than what is noted on the box 15GB Why is this?

Your FA&Q

The capacity shown in the Windows* operating system for the Intel® Optane memory series module is less than what is noted on the box. Why is this?

The operating system and related tools report a smaller capacity than you see on the box. The module uses a small portion of memory (3GB are small?????)????media management and maintenance. The listed density is the raw density of the 3D XPoint Memory Media. The total user capacity remains constant throughout the life of the drive.

Hi RArro;

Computer Memory industry has established, memory is measured using the metric system, as you can see below:

1 MB = 1,000,000 bits/bytes

1 kb = 1,000 bits/bytes

1 bit/byte

However, to describe data storage, bits/bytes are calculated as follows:

1 byte = 8 bits

1 kilobyte (K / Kb) = 2^10 bytes = 1,024 bytes

1 megabyte (M / MB) = 2^20 bytes = 1,048,576 bytes

1 gigabyte (G / GB) = 2^30 bytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes

In order to keep your computer resources available all of the time for storage and processing, Intel® Optane™ Memory does not take those resources to perform its functions; therefore, the developers have implemented the module to use its own storage for caching purposes, media management and maintenance.

The remaining storage is used to help you accelerate your system, according to your usage habits.

As you have duly addressed the FAQs details on this subject, that’s the way Intel® Optane™ Memory works.

We hope you find this information useful.

Have a nice day

Hello, RArro.

Good day,

This post is to follow up on your ticket since there has been no response after my colleague provided you some information regarding the SSD capacity displayed by the operating system.

Please let me know if you still need assistance.

Best regards,
