Will secondary drive be deleted when setting up Optane?

Hello, I want to install 16gb of Optane memory in my PC to improve speed of my secondary drive which is a 2TB HDD, because my SSD is 250gb and I'd like to install certain programs in the mechanical disk. The thing is that the HDD already has information and, besides, is partitioned for Linux boot (around 70gb). If I setup the Optane, will I lose my information? Will the Optane work in Windows even if there's a partition made for Linux?

Thanks in advance.

Hi WBlan,

Thank you for posting in the Intel® communities.

I understand you would like to setup the Intel® Optane™ Memory with your secondary drive.

Unfortunately, the module cannot be paired with your drive in its current state. There are some requirements the secondary drive must meet in order to be accelerated, and among these requirements the drive has to have one single partition and no OSs installed.

This means that you would have to format your drive before trying to set it up with the Intel® Optane™ Memory.

I recommend you to perform a low-level format in your drive so all data can be erased completely. Please check the following article where there are some third party tools that can help you with the low-level format process: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000006198/memory-and-storage.html

I also recommend you to check the following articles about the secondary drive acceleration and the requirements the drive and the system must meet:

I hope you find this information useful.

If there is anything else I can help you with, feel free to ask.

Have a nice day.
