There is currently a sea of used Optane PMEMs flooding the secondhand market with dwindling amounts of active machines that can use them, our retired Xeon scalable being one. It makes me sad that our new Granite Rapids machines cannot use them. Please, Intel, let us use this great memory technology on our newer machines! The Optane technology would fit very well onto a CXL type 3 (CXLmem) expansion board either as DIMMs or as surface-mount modules. A few high density surface-mount Optane pmems would also make my mobile workstation more capable.
What made it a great value then was still true now: it’s cheaper and denser than DRAM, but faster and more durable than NVMe flash.
