Hello,
I tried to update the firmware of an Intel SSD 540s to LSF031C. The Intel firmware update tool (issdfut_2.1.3.iso) was run from a bootable USB flash drive.
The firmware update tool gave this firmware update failure message:
"The Intel SATA Firmware Update did not complete. Please try the following:
1) Disable the drive password in the computer's BIOS
2) Enable SMART features in the computer's BIOS
3) Enable legacy IDE mode in the comuter's BIOS"
# 1: There is no drive password set in the BIOS.
# 2: I couldn't find any reference to SMART in the BIOS. I know however that SMART is enabled, since SMART data is shown in the Intel SSD Toolbox program (Win7).
# 3: The drive boot mode is set to Legacy in the BIOS, but it's unclear to me if this is "legacy IDE mode".
The 540s SSD is in an Intel NUC5PPYH.
Current SSD Firmware: LSBG200
SSD FUT: 2.1.3
NUC Visual BIOS: 2.2.20
Would you try to update the firmware at all, given this https://security-center.intel.com/advisory.aspx?intelid=INTEL-SA-00053&languageid=en-fr vhttps://security-center.intel.com/advisory.aspx?intelid=INTEL-SA-00053&languageid=en-fr ulnerability report?
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you NC, for your quick reply.
I've just run Intel SSD Toolbox. It shows that the SSD has the new firmware LSB031C, although the firmware update tool did produce the update failure message.
I take it that the SSD Toolbox software is reporting the new firmware version only if it is actually present on the drive?

Fritzz,
-We don't see the BIOS version you provided in the latest BIOS Update page for the NUC5PPYH, here is the https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25991/BIOS-Update-PYBSWCEL-86A-?product=85254 link.
-Is the SSD540 connected directly to the SATA port in the NUC or is it connected via USB to SATA cable? We need to make sure to plug the drive directly to the NUC's port.
-Is there a chance you could try to run the update in another machine?
Psyh0x,
Could you as well try running the update in a different machine?
In the meantime we only have the FUT to update the firmware.
Please let us know.

My current BIOS Version is 0054 - PYBSWCEL.86A.0054.2016.0503.1546 (This comes with Visual BIOS 2.2.20)
The 540s sits in the dedicated HDD/SSD slot/bay inside the NUC5PPYH. So, I take it that it's connected directly to the SATA port.

Hello,
I have same problem. But I think, that you know about the problem because the last version of firmware update tool is not avilable now.
I plan to return the disk to seller if no solution will be published here until monday.

Sulahim,
The latest FUT 2.1.3 is temporarily down for maintenance. The current version available is FUT 2.1.2.
We hope to have the latest one uploaded anytime soon, we will keep you informed.

Please advise when FUT 2.1.3 is expected to be available - and if the firmware update will be available through Intel SSD Toolbox. I have an Intel SSD 540s 1TB M.2 on LSBG100 firmware that I need to update since we use ATA Password security so can't have corruption issues - but FUT doesn't even boot on my machine (Lenovo T460s) because it says "can't startx, no displays found" and I don't have any other computers that have an 80mm M.2 slot

my advice to you , is backup the drive first
then go to where you bought it and change it right away
intel dosent give any support for firmware failure ,
samsung are much better in this case
good luck .

Hi, Invalid_username
Have you turned off the Secure Boot off and change the boot mode to Legacy in the BIOS? The FUT only boots from Legacy.
I have the same problem with my T440. ThinkPad boot from UEFI first as default, so you need to change the settings in the BIOS.

Thanks, yes I've tried all this, but regardless it says "no displays found" - i don't believe the version of linux used in the bootable tool supports the graphics chipset on the latest Lenovo T460s... but i hope they update this because currently it's the only computer I have access to which has a M.2 Sata slot.. which is rare, again why i'm stuck with intel as it's the only one offering a 1TB SATA M.2 SSD

Invalid_username,
At this moment we are validating a new FUT for the 540s drive. We have no official ETA for the release, but we will make sure to provide it as soon as it becomes available.
Thanks.

psyh0x,
First of all, it is not normal the data is deleted by running the firmware update. As you can see it worked for previous user.
-We would like to know what were the steps you followed to run the update?
-Could you share screenshots of how the drive shows from Disk Management and Intel® Solid State Drive Toolbox?
-Are you able to plug the drive as a secondary unit to try to read your data?
Also, we would like to know if you received the same message than the previous user about the steps to follow?
We will be waiting for your response.
