Unable to update RS2BL040 f/w

I have a Windows 7 Pro x64 system running the RS2BL040 RAID controller. Out of the box the RS2BL040 is running f/w version 2.70.03-0862 as shown by RWC2 version 12.08.03.02. I downloaded the latest O/S independent f/w from the RS2BL040 support site. It is f/w package version 12.12.0-124 containing the f/w version 2.130.363-1846. From within RWC2 I browse to the MR48.rom file, select it, and I confirm that I want to replace the existing f/w with the new f/w. The process begins, but then fails with the message "Failed to flash f/w image because flash command sequence is incorrect or previous f/w flash operation was terminated". The message in the RWC2 log file is "Flash downloaded image corrupt". I downloaded the same package again from the support site, unzipped it, and tried the process again with the same result.

Anyone know what the issue might be?

Thanks.

Can you try to update it using command line? Extract files under CmdTool2\Windows into the same folder as MR48.rom, and run the following command:

CmdTool2 -adpfwflash -f MR48.rom -aall

Edward, thanks for the response. Pardon my newb question, but where do I type the command you mentioned in your post? Do I type it in a DOS command line window from within Windows 7 or somewhere else? Do I need to download the Command Line Tool for Windows to do what you suggested? Now you know why I tried to use RWC2 to perform the update.

In a command prompt window (cmd) within Windows 7.

I ran this with the MR48.rom file and cmdtool264.exe file in the temp directory:

c:\temp> cmdtool264 -adpfwflash -f MR48.rom -aall

and here were the results:

CreateFile failed with error: 5

CreateFile failed with error: 5

CreateFile failed with error: 5

Exit Code: 0x01

I was going to attach the log file, but couldn't figure out how. I only see editor options to attach pictures, videos, and links; no file attach.

I believe you have administrator privilege right? Can you try to start the command prompt window as administrator?

I am the only user of this PC and I have Administrator rights.

Could you try to run command prompt as Administrator:

Click the start button. In the search box, type cmd. When cmd.exe pops up, right click on it and select "Run as administrator". Then run the cmdtool2 command.

Ok, I did what you suggested (not sure why running as Administrator was needed as my account info shows I have Administrator rights) and here was the result:

c:\temp> cmdtool264 -adpfwflash -f MR48.rom -aall

Adaptor 0: Intel (R) RAID Controller RS2BL040

Vendor ID: 0x1000, Device ID: 0x0079

Package version on the controller: 12.7.0-0007

Download Completed.

Flashing image to adapter...

Exit Code: 0x13

I don't mind at all, but unfortunately I got the same results:

c:\temp> cmdtool264 -adpfwflash -f 2108_p35.rom -aall

Adaptor 0: Intel (R) RAID Controller RS2BL040

Vendor ID: 0x1000, Device ID: 0x0079

Package version on the controller: 12.7.0-0007

Package version of the image file: 12.12.0-0111

Download Completed.

Flashing image to adapter...

Firmware Failed to Flash flash. Stop!!!

FW error description:

The requested command cannot be completed as the image is corrupted.

Exit Code: 0x13

By the way, thanks Edward for all your help in assisting me to figure out this issue. It is puzzling.

With version -0036 which f/w binary should I use, the large 8MB one or the smaller one?

The smaller one, mr_m09p1.rom.

It appears that the flash to -0036 completed successfully - thank you. I will update the f/w incrementally until I get to the latest version like the other poster did with the RS2BL080.

Should I do like the readme file says and reset the adapter to factory defaults after each f/w upgrade?

I believe you can upgrade from -0036 to latest version directly. Only need reset to factory defaults after upgrade to latest.

I successfully updated the RS2BL040 f/w to version 2.130.363-1846 with package version 12.12.0-124 using RWC2. I appreciate all of your help Edward.

Now for installation of the AXXRPFKDE Premium Feature Key.
