VP8,VP9 Encoder/Decoder HW acceleration support using Intel Media SDK

Hi,

Does the Intel Media SDK support HW acceleration of VP8, VP9 Encoder and Decoder on Windows? Is there a sample application which demonstrates VP8/9 codec usage using Intel Media SDK?

In the latest Media SDK (2016) I see mfxvp8.h and mfxvp9.h include header files, but there is no mention of VP8/9 encoding/decoding in the Media SDK reference manual.

Hi Shivaprasd,

Intel Media SDK is platform/HW dependent. HW acceleration support available for VP8 decode and VP9  decode (hybrid acceleration implementation) only on latest 6th generation platform. Link to samples: https://software.intel.com/en-us/media-sdk-support/code-samples.

Thanks,

Thanks Harsh.

So to confirm - Intel Media SDK on Windows does NOT have support for HW acceleration of VP8/VP9 Encoding?

Hi Shivaprasad,

Yes, currently with latest 6th generation processors, HW acceleration for VP8/VP9 Encoding is not supported for Windows. But, you can expect  support with future generation processors.

Thanks,

Hi!

On which generation of Intel Processors can we expect VP9 hardware encoding (Windows platform) ?

Hi Michael,

Media SDK 2018 R1 add VP9 encode as preview feature for Cannon Lake processor:

Hi Michael,

I'm doing a project that takes the IP camera's frame data and convert it to mp4, vp8, and vp9.  Would you recommend on using intel media sdk for the tasks?

Does the SDK support mac os?  We do have servers running with Celeron i3, i5, i7 chips, does the hardware acceleration support these chipsets? Thank you.

Hi Wei Chih,

Media SDK don't support Mac OS. There are few Celeron chips support HW acceleration, for example the following processor:

https://ark.intel.com/products/87257/Intel-Celeron-Processor-N3050-2M-Cache-up-to-2-16-GHz-

You can got to https://ark.intel.com and check the processor spec, if it support "Quick Sync Video", it should have HW acceleration capability.
