How can I enable brightness control in Linux Mint on a 3rd-gen CPU with Intel HD graphics?

In Windows, I enabled brightness control on my 3rd-gen laptop CPU by modifying the registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000

by changing 'FeatureTestControl' from f000 to f008. Simply installing the graphics drivers didn't work.

How can I achieve the same in Linux Mint?
