Intel 14th Gen CPU Overheating on Laptop

Hello,
I have an MSI gaming laptop (MSI Katana 15 B13VEK) with an Intel i5-13420H (8 P-cores, 4 E-cores) and an RTX 4050, purchased in September 2024.

I am experiencing overheating issues while gaming, with temperatures exceeding 85°C.

Here are the key points:

- Frequent occurrence of "Thermal Throttling."
- I always have MSI's "Cooler Boost" mode enabled (fans at 100%).
- During stress tests (Cinebench or Prime95), the CPU temperature is stable. In games, it is unstable.
- I reduced PL1 and PL2 power limits to 50W and 60W (originally 200W), but it made no difference.
- I cannot undervolt my processor because it is blocked by the microcode.
- The laptop is regularly cleaned.

I need your guidance on what I should do to reduce temperatures while gaming, as this appears to be a purely software-related issue. Would lowering the Turbo Boost frequency ratios be more effective than reducing the power limits?

Which settings have the greatest impact on temperature?

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Hello KayzeXIV,

Thank you for posting in Intel Communities.

Since this involves an OEM laptop, please understand that our support may be limited due to manufacturer-specific customizations, proprietary features, and settings we may not be familiar with. However, I'll do my best to assist you.

To better diagnose your thermal issue, please provide the following information:

1) Please confirm this is your exact laptop model.

2) Which specific game(s) are experiencing high temperatures?

3) What troubleshooting steps have you already attempted?

4) Is this a new issue, or were you previously able to game without thermal problems?

5) If it worked before, what changes occurred prior to the issue?

Additionally, kindly help share your SSU log file so I can fully check and provide you with an accurate fix.

Looking forward to your reply.

Best regards,

JeanetteC.
