Intel Management Engine Error

Hi, I am tackling with a weird problem for about a year,

My computer shut down exactly 30 minutes after I pressed power button (even in BIOS screen), but this is not consistent. For example, it may not shut down at all for a day but a day later it can shut down 10-12 times in a row. While shutting down, it makes the same sound as when shutting it down with holding down power button for 5 seconds. So, I researched the problem on the internet and learned problem is caused by Intel Management Engine malfunction.  Many suggested that the problem is about Management Engine Framework, and it can be solved by updating or re-installing BIOS. I updated BIOS with the driver provided from MSI website and now my PC is not acknowledging ME FW at all. In BIOS screen, ME FW version is stated as N/A (image 1) and because of that, I cannot even install the Management Engine Interface (so it does not list in Device Manager). Whenever I try to install Management Engine Interface, setup gives an error message says, “This system doesn’t meet the software installation requirements” (image 2) (Since my system language is Turkish, I translated the error message). I tried installing Intel DSA, but it didn’t help. And to make the matters worse, frequency of shutting down seems increasing. At the beginning after shutting down 2 or 3 times, computer was working properly so it was somewhat easy to ignore. But for the last 3 days, I re-opened my computer 20 th time after it closed, and it is annoying at best.

This is a MSI hardware/bios problem.  Contact MSI for support in correcting this.   If they cannot, take the device to a recycle bin.

What's going on here is that the Intel Management Engine (ME) is not running. Without it running, the chipset will power down the system after 30 minutes - which is exactly what you are seeing. As well, in the BIOS display of the ME firmware version, seeing it display 'N/A' or '0.0.0.0' or blank is also an indicator of the ME not operating - which is exactly what you are seeing.

As Doc indicated, this is a problem with the BIOS, which is responsible for the management of the firmware installation processes - including that for the ME. You need to work with your motherboard vendor - MSI in this case - to fix this issue.

It may be, with a board this old, MSI will not be interested in helping you. That we cannot to anything about.

Thank you for the answer, I posted nearly same post to their support simultenously. I am aware of the chances with a board so old, but tried anyway.

Can I ask about what can be the reason for that inconsistency? Why Management Engine run sometimes and not run others?

Well, there are a slew of possibilities when talking about a 10 year old system. Here are a few:

1. (Forgot about this possibility) Your CMOS battery may be exhausted. This may result in the system not initializing properly or consistently. Spend the $2 and get a replacement CR2032 battery. IMHO, everyone should do this every 3 years.
2. Your board's flash component (where BIOS and ME firmware, etc. are stored) may be partially corrupted.
3. Your board's flash component may be in the process of failing.
4. Your board's chipset components may be in the process of failing.

Thank you so much for the answer. So my PC is dead in a sense? Software issues are something I am willing tackle up to a certain limit but I cant try to repair hardware with my current knowledge, and changing motherboard nearly same thing as changing computer. I guess I will continue to wait an answer from MSI support but probably need to replace this computer.

Yes, it very well could be. It's and 4th generation system and they are in the process of releasing the 13th generation; that's 9 generations and 9 years of wear and tear. You can try to get it going again, but I wouldn't be spending any serious amount of money doing so. No, I would be saving it for a new system. With all the changes in technologies, you are looking at having to replace the processor, motherboard, memory, graphics card (if Intel's internal graphics is not good enough) and most likely power supply too.

You could try replacing your CMOS battery. You might have disconnected or reconnected it (or not) but give it a try, it might work
