Problem with my processor....core 2 duo 3.0 Ghz E8400

My PC works fine if i use my PC in Single processor mode.....but it hangs when it runs in double processor mode after my OS(win XP SP3) has started.....but wen i am running games it is fine.....pl help....wat is the exact problem???is it a problem with my processor or my motherboard(DG31PR)....i ve done all precautions to ensure perfect thermal conditions.....pl help me....
