RAPL Domains Availability on Intel Core i7-10700 (Comet Lake)

Hello,
I am working on energy profiling for data processing workloads using pyJoules and powercap.
My system is:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-10700 @ 2.90GHz

  • OS: Ubuntu 22.04

When I run powercap-info -p intel-rapl, I only see:

  • package-0 (enabled)

  • core (disabled)

  • No dram, uncore, or pp1 domains are shown.

I would like to know:

  1. Is this expected behavior for this CPU?

  2. Has support for dram and pp1 RAPL domains been deprecated on this architecture?

  3. Is there any BIOS setting or kernel module I should enable?

Any guidance or documentation reference would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi Isha6101,

Thank you for posting in our Community. To help us provide more precise guidance, could you please confirm the following?

  • Could you share the BIOS version and whether there are any advanced power management or RAPL-related options available in your BIOS setup?
  • What exact Linux kernel version are you running (name -r)?
  • Just to confirm, which version of pyJoules are you using?

Unfortunately, there is no public setting in consumer BIOS menus to enable additional RAPL domains if they are fused off at the silicon or firmware level

Have a nice day!

I am sharing the required system details and relevant context that may assist in troubleshooting or support:

BIOS Version: F13
(Motherboard: Gigabyte B560M H)

Power Management / RAPL Settings in BIOS:
In the BIOS under Tweaker Mode → Advanced Memory Settings, I found the DRAM Voltage option available. Please let me know if there are any other RAPL-related or advanced power management settings I should enable. I can share screenshots if needed.

Linux Kernel Version: 6.8.0-60-generic

pyJoules Version: 0.5.2

Please let me know if any additional information is required.

Thank you for your support.

Hello Isha6101,

I appreciate your patience. For this particular concern, we recommend contacting the software developer directly for further clarification. As the results you're referencing involve third-party software, we're limited in our ability to interpret or validate those findings due to a lack of detailed insight into how that tool functions. That said, you may consider using our Intel® VTune™ Profiler as an alternative for performance and energy analysis. It’s a robust tool designed to provide in-depth insights into your system’s behavior and performance.
