Subject: Virtualization chipset for the i7-8700

The i7-8700 supports virutalization:

Based on the following, the z370 chipset also supports virtualization

https://ark.intel.com/products/125903/Intel-Z370-Chipset

Based on the following, the z390 chipset does NOT support virtualization:

https://ark.intel.com/products/133293/Intel-Z390-Chipset

Question: If I want to build an Intel Virtualization compatible system, am I correct that I can't use a z390 motherboard?

Yes, you are correct the virtualization feature is hardware, and it is not present on the product specification neither on the product brief (https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-briefs/z390-chipset-product-brief.pdf). Hi Leonardo,

I don't have a specific motherboard in mind. I sent my question to one of the manufacturers but have not received a response.

From the Intel point of view, my general question is, since the Z390 chipset DOES NOT support virtualization, MUST I look for motherboards that have the Z370 chipset so that I can build an Intel based Virtualization compatible system.

Hello BFosb Yes, you need you have a hardware set that support the virtualization feature, in this case the Intel® Z390 Chipset does not supports this feature. As mentioned previously once you have decided what motherboard you prefer you can confirm with the manufacturer if the feature is supported. Regards, Leonardo C.
