i9 14900k Thermal throttling

Specs:

CPU: i9 14900k

Mainboard: Asus z790 A

GPU: RTX 4090

RAM: 64 GB DDR 5 6000mhz

Thermal Grizzly contact frame

Latest Bios Version with Intel default settings.

Hey Guys, I have a problem with my CPU. When I play games like DayZ, I experience thermal throttling after about 5 minutes in-game. In HWInfo, it indicates thermal throttling for about 1 second. This repeats approximately every 60 seconds.

What can I do? I know the i9 14900K generates a lot of heat, but I'm not sure if it's normal to experience thermal throttling in a game like DayZ.

Hi, MrMoosly.

Thank you for posting in our Community.

Throttling is a mechanism in Intel® Processors to reduce the clock speed when the temperature in the system reaches above TJ Max (or Tcase). This is to protect the processor and to indicate to the user that there is an overheating issue in their system that they need to monitor.

Have you checked the CPU temperatures using HWInfo or another monitoring tool to see how high they are reaching during gameplay? Moreover, I'd like to know if you encountered any error messages or BSOD. If you have done any other tests please let me know the details so we don't cover the same ground twice.

Looking forward to your response. Have a nice day!

Hello, thank you for your answer. I posted a screenshot from HWInfo, i played Dayz and i got thermal throttling again. This seriously makes me sad. I even switched my AIO. Now i got an NZXT Kraken ELITE 360mm AIO. And i still got these temperatures.

What can i do? is my prozessor broken? I also installed an Thermal Grizzly contact frame.

And im running the latest biops with the intel default settings.

Pls help me

Hi, MrMoosly.

Thank you for your message and for sharing the details of your situation. I understand that you’re still experiencing thermal throttling issues despite your recent upgrades and efforts and I’m here to help you get this resolved. I noticed that you’ve already taken significant steps to address the problem, including switching to a high-performance NZXT Kraken ELITE 360mm AIO cooler and installing a Thermal Grizzly contact frame. Processors have two modes of thermal protection: throttling and automatic shutdown. When a core exceeds the set throttle temperature, it will start to reduce power to bring the temperature back below that point. The throttle temperature can vary by processor and BIOS settings. If the conditions are such that throttling is unable to keep the temperature down, such as a thermal solution failure or incorrect assembly, the processor will automatically shut down to prevent permanent damage. Tjunction max is the maximum thermal junction temperature that a processor will allow prior to using internal thermal control mechanisms to reduce power and limit temperature.
