Hello,
I have a Foxconn motherboard based on the SiS 661FX chipset.
It worked for several years with no problems, with a Pentium 4 3 GHz CPU (1024 MB cache, 200 MHz FSB).
Now I purchased (used of course) and installed a Pentium D 915 - 2.8 GHz, 2x2048 MB cache, 200 MHz FSB. As the FSB remains the same I did not expect problems.
But the system became unstable. I use Debian Linux (squeeze) and once in a few hours I get a hang, or (less often) an X server segfault and restart.
The CPU is kept cool enough by a Zalman cooler with heat pipes on max revs; besides, it usually crashes wihout any particular load. So I'm not overheating it. And the RAM can not be stressed as the FSB has not changed, right?
I got the BITS utility from Intel - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=483&DwnldID=19763〈=eng&iid=dc_rss http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=483&DwnldID=19763〈=eng&iid=dc_rss . And in the "MSR comparison text", it shows that four MSRs are not the same for the two "CPUs" (cores). The MSRs are 0x2a, 0x198, 0x19f, 0x26f .
Can this be the cause of stability issues? And if yes, is there a way to resolve it, other than getting the motherboard manufacturer to fix the BIOS?
(Another suspicion is overheating of the north bridge - although the north bridge should not be loaded more than before? but then there is more heat dissipated in the case).

Please bear in mind that this product is no longer under support, but I would suggest making sure that your motherboard fully supports the processor that you have.

I did make sure the CPU is supported before acquiring it. Here is the CPU support list for this motherboard:
http://www.foxconnsupport.com/cpusupportlist.aspx?type=mb&model=661FX7MJ-RSH&cputype= http://www.foxconnsupport.com/cpusupportlist.aspx?type=mb&model=661FX7MJ-RSH&cputype=
I understand the model is not under support, but I would very much appreciate information on the meaning of these particular MSRs: 0x2a, 0x198, 0x19f, 0x26f .

I would suggest contacting a Field Application Engineer (FAE) tough any of the Authorized Intel® Distributor s so they can provide you the meaning of those MSRs.
