PCH A0D3 | Storage | SATA commands are freezing in AHCI Storage Mode with HDD

DieWithYourBootsON

We are observing that the SATA commands are freezing/responding after very long time in AHCI mode with HDD.

Is this a known issue?

Analysis:

The application is trying to fetch the information from HDD using SATA ATA command. To get the information application is sending commands using win32 DeviceIoControl API and IOCTLs. However, the response is frozen/very slow.

RIAD Mode test. (HDD & M.2) - Pass
AHCI Mode test. (Only M2) - Pass
AHCI Mode test. (Only HDD) - Freeze/taking too long time.
AHCI Mode test. (HDD & M2) - Freeze/taking too long time.

out of band (OOB) signals is sending COMRESET, COMINIT and COMWAKE in AHCI Mode. OOB Sequence type is sending SATA COMRESET form host to the device before sending commands which is taking a lot of time to process. out of band (OOB) signals is sending only COMWAKE in RAID Mode.

Hello DieWithYourBootsON,

Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

For us to further understand the situation and also provide appropriate and relevant support, may we know exactly what are trying to do and accomplish with this? Also, share with us your system specification (eg: motherboard, processor,, etc) via Intel SSU - https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18377/25293/intel-system-support-utility-for-windows.html?v=t

Additionally, what is the Intel RST version used? Is it from Intel or from motherboard or your system manufacturer? Lastly, what type of RAID setup do you have? (eg: RAID 0, RAID 1, etc) and how many drives and what exact models?

Best regards,

Jay B.

Hi Jay,

Sorry for the delayed response.

"may we know exactly what are trying to do and accomplish with this?"

I am trying to get the configuration of the controllers and HDD using ATA commands. I have pasted the configuration example below. The issue is especially with SMART command (command - ATA_CMD_SMART, feature - ATA_CMD_SMART_READ_LOG).

"Share with us your system specification."

I have pasted the SKU below. The Submit option is not working.

"what is the Intel RST version used?"

Controller: Standard ATA AHCI Controller (v10.0.22621.2506) with storahci.sys driver

"Is it from Intel or from motherboard or your system manufacturer?"

The controller used is from Intels. I guess it is integrated on the motherboard of the manufacturer.

" What type of RAID setup do you have? (eg: RAID 0, RAID 1, etc.) and how many drives and what exact models"

We are using AHCI mode and not RAID. I had tested this behavior with RAID to isolate the issue with AHCI. Previously Intel had provided the driver for the AHCI mode. Link attached till windows 8.1. i am looking for windows 11 driver.

Hello DieWithYourBootsON,

We have reviewed the information you've submitted, but we're encountering difficulties in interpreting the logs. To proceed effectively, we require additional details about your system, such as the motherboard, processor, and whether it's a custom-built PC or an OEM system. It seems the System Support Utility (SSU) report you provided is formatted differently than expected.

To assist us in understanding your system better, could you please generate a new SSU report by following the instructions provided in the link? Here's the link: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000057926/memory-and-storage.html - How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*

Once completed, kindly attach the SSU text file to this thread. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Have attached the system info details.

This is an OEM system and not a custom-built system.

Attached SSU text file to this thread.

Hello DieWithYourBootsON,

I've received an update on the investigation into the issue you're encountering. It has been determined that storahci.sys is a universal AHCI driver from Microsoft, crafted to interface with SATA controllers under AHCI mode on a variety of platforms. For further details, you may refer to the support page for the Latitude 3420 on Dell's website.

Given that your system is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) design, it's possible that Dell has specifically fine-tuned this driver for their hardware. In light of this, I would recommend reaching out to Dell for any additional advice or support they might offer regarding this situation. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
