I was looking to buy a Supermicro board like this https://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/xeon3000/3400/X8SIL.cfm?IPMI=Y for a highish speed hard drive based ZFS Z2 NAS with 10Gig networking. I wanted to put an lsi hba card in along with the NIC, but the ARK listing for the 3420 chipset says that is only supports 8 pcie lanes https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/42904/intel-3420-chipset.html This seems ridiculus. Am I missing something here? I hope I am, but would love to have it confirmed.

Hello drhoa2,
Thank you for contacting Intel Servers Support.
A PCI Express (PCIe) lane consists of two differential signaling pairs, one for receiving data, one for transmitting data, and is the basic unit of the PCIe bus. # of PCI Express Lanes is the total number supported by the processor. So, please provide us the information about the model of your Intel Xeon Processor? Also, you can verify this information with Super Micro Support in order to confirm the information of your system.
Please let me know if you have more questions and I will be more than happy to assist you.
Best regards,
Emeth O.
Intel Server Specialist.
