Hi,

When I run intel xdk it freeze on startup on windows with black screen or sometimes half black screen.
What I do is kill nw.exe process intel xdk pops up a dialog if to upload  log, I usually answer yet.
then intel xdk restarts and give option if to continue normal or safe restart.
if I dont choose safe restart in about 30 seconds then it stuck again and need to kill nw.exe process again.
when i choose safe restart all is good and i can open any of my projects.
I'm using intel xdk 2366 on Windows 7.

Thanks,
Roi

Restart your machine, before that close the XDK and remove all the cache.

Make sure you are saving your changes before doing so.

thanks. it helped at first and xdk loaded ok but after opening the second project it got stuck again.

Looking in the process manager I can see nw.exe process memory is rising every second. I killed it when it reached 251MB memory.

After killing and doing safe restart I see on normal operation memory is at 136MB.

What build of the XDK do you have installed

How much RAM do you have installed on your computer?

I am using windows machine and XDK 2496 works fine for me. Try one more time with different network(wifi).

how is a wifi network related to the fact xdk freeze and the need to kill its process and choosing safe restart?

Roi -- what Amrita meant was to try a different network location. For example, if you are trying this on your work network, try it on your home network, or vice versa, to see if there is a proxy issue or something similar.

ok. I tried it and it's not the network.

Killing the process (so I can get to safe restart mode) or deleting the cache as suggested works for first run.
I can open a project without problems but closing the xdk and re-running it brings the problem back.

Roi, have you done a complete uninstall? See this post: https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/intel-xdk/topic/542074 do not install the 1621 that is attached after you have done a complete uninstall, install 2496 by downloading it from http://xdk.intel.com

Hi Paul,

I did not try full uninstall. I started following the instructions but after uninstall xdk and deleting the files mentioned and running the installer again the installer thinks there is still something to uninstall and only gives repair or uninstall options.
see screenshot: http://prntscr.com/8lpfwb

Both options uninstall or repair fail. see screenshot: http://prntscr.com/8lpgr2

Though repair did copy files and added shortcut icon so I have it "installed" but maybe something is missing.

Running the XDK freeze again as it did before. Needed to kill it and choose safe restart for it to load and ask my credentials as a first time run.

Please use the instructions I provided to completely uninstall and start over with your installation.

Do not kill the nw.exe process, that is the XDK. If you are killing the nw.exe process as you are using the XDK that will stop the XDK.

what do you mean?

I must kill nw.exe it just stuck there forever increasing memory usage without end. killing it release the XDK freeze giving me the option for safe restart. this is the only option I have for running the XDK.

This is all very strange. Do you have an anti-virus or firewall program running that may be blocking nw.exe?

shouldn't be. it works on safe restart. so it can work. just after exit it doesn't work again.

There are 2 places where XDK freeze.

1. most of the times its after the splash screen the main window opens but its all black. i just see the window frame.
screenshot: http://prntscr.com/8ma6tt

2. can load normally but just not responsive. everything is open but i can't click anything. not even the window frame X button to close the app.

btw #2 started only with xdk 2946. now i need multiple kills+safe restart just to get xdk working for a quick build.

I'm going to ask some engineering folks to look into this, they may want to contact you directly, so I'll be providing them with the email address you're using on the forum.

Here's another thought - is it possible that your project has a memory leak? Do you always open to the same project? If so, try closing that project and open a different one, then restart XDK with that second project loaded.

how can a project have memory leak if it's not running ? it's not the emulator freezing. its the xdk. it freeze on startup way before the gui shows something way before i event select a project. i only see the xdk startup logo and sometimes black window behind it.

anyway it happens all the time. i only have 2 small projects. it even happened when i had empty project.
