Determining PMU (perfmon) version

I'm looking for the correct way to determine the PMU (perfmon) version in code. I am looking at the Intel Perf Mon tools source code, and can see they extract the version by doing some bit fiddling in the cpuinfo.array[] - I'm trying to avoid replicating that in python. Alternatively, is there a mapping between processor type/version and PMU version? In other words, can I make an assumption about which  PMU version is on the chip if I know the chip is a (for example) Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v2?

Thanks

Jim
