Driver update locks out network card

For the last several months, after Intel driver update, Windows 11 Dell AiO computer locks out my network card. It only comes back after multiple re-starts.

This is a Dell Inspiron 27 7730 running updated Windows 11 Home with an Intel WiFi 6EAX211 160 MHz wireless adaptor.

Hi CharlieATL,

Thank you for reaching out about the network card lockout issues you've been experiencing with your Dell Inspiron 27 7730.

I understand how frustrating it must be to lose your Wi-Fi connection after Intel driver updates and have to restart multiple times to get it working again. Let's try a clean driver installation to see if we can get this sorted out for you.

Clean Driver Installation Steps:

Important: Turn off your Wi-Fi before we start with these steps.

Step 1: Remove Current Driver

  1. Right-click Start → Device Manager
  2. Expand Network adapters
  3. Right-click your Intel WiFi 6E AX211 160MHz → Uninstall device
  4. Check "Delete the driver software for this device" if you see that option
  5. Click Uninstall and restart your computer

Step 2: Fresh Driver Install

Best option: Dell's OEM driver

  • Head to Dell's support site for your Inspiron 27 7730
  • Grab the latest wireless driver made specifically for your system
  • This usually works best since Dell customizes it for your machine
  • If Dell doesn't have one available, download Intel Wi-Fi Driver version 24.40 from Intel's site
  • Run it as Administrator and follow the setup
  • Restart when it asks you to
  • If both of the drivers are available, you can test both of them to see what works properly.

Step 3: Test It Out

  • Turn your Wi-Fi back on
  • Connect to your network
  • Keep an eye on it after any future driver updates

If the issue persists, I'd love to get some more details:

  1. When you say it "locks out," what exactly happens? Does the adapter just disappear, or refuse to connect?
  2. Does this happen right after driver updates, or does it take some time?
  3. Any error messages popping up in Device Manager?
  4. Is this the original adapter or did you self-integrate it?
  5. Could you please provide the specific problematic driver version?

Let me know how the driver reinstall goes! We're looking forward to your response.

Best regards

Hello Jonzyl, and thanks for taking the time to step me through this. I’m going to go ahead and follow your steps and just wait for the next Intel update to appear and have me restart my PC.  If it installs and I restart with WiFi, than great, and I’ll try to remember to f/u so you know the outcome.  I’ll try to do this in the next day or two when my PC can be down for a while.

IRT to your questions, When you say it "locks out," what exactly happens? Does the adapter just disappear, or refuse to connect? Does this happen right after driver updates, or does it take some time? Any error messages popping up in Device Manager? Is this the original adapter or did you self-integrate it? Could you please provide the specific problematic driver version?

Locks out meant that I get the round icon instead of the traditional WiFi icon in the system tray, and when I click on it, both Bluetooth and WiFi are unavailable. When I click through to the Network Adaptor settings, or call up Control Panes/System to access that, it just disappears when I try to access it! It will take multiple restarts, i.e. G3 & S5 to get back to S0; restart doesn’t get me anywhere.  On some occasions, after waiting 10-20 minutes, WiFi will restart.  And this ONLY happens after driver updates initiated by Intel’s DSA, it does not appear to be a Windows 11 issue or associated with Windows system updates, KBs or security updates. I don’t know if an error message appears in device manager.

Here is the driver store Info, from Index of C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\netwtw6e

First, there are no error codes in Device Manager for my wireless driver.

Next, I want to report that I have not yet undertaken your instructions because I wanted to see if a Windows update would cause the same issue, and therefore decided to await an update option.  This morning that occurred, so I proceeded with the Windows update and got the same issue with my WiFi network adaptor, i.e. would not operate and required 5 restarts/reboots to finally kick in.

Where this leads me is the next obvious question...is it an Intel issue or a Windows issue?  All thoughts welcome.

So, my plan is to not undertake another update until I've followed your instructions.  I do have a question however.  You said to turn off WiFi before deleting the driver.  I'm presuming that to mean in Windows, not on my router.  Secondly, I of course will have to turn it on again to proceed, but having deleted the driver as instructed, will that even work?  I'll wait to hear from you on this before proceeding and appreciate your help of course.

Hi CharlieATL,

Thank you for the detailed update.

Regarding your question, yes, when we mentioned turning off WiFi, we were referring to your laptop's WiFi, not your router. So no need to touch your router settings at all!

Now, to address your concern about the driver deletion process, here's a clearer breakdown of what we'd like you to do — this is essentially a clean installation of the driver:

  1. Download the driver first — Before doing anything else, make sure you have already downloaded the latest Intel WiFi driver to your system so it's ready to install.
  2. Turn off your laptop's WiFi — Disable your WiFi through Windows settings or the taskbar before proceeding.
  3. Delete/Uninstall the existing driver — Go to Device Manager, locate your wireless adapter, and uninstall the driver.
  4. Install the downloaded driver — Run the driver installer that you previously downloaded.
  5. Turn your WiFi back on — Once the installation is complete, re-enable your WiFi and test the connection.

The reason we follow this order is to ensure that Windows doesn't automatically reinstall an incompatible or outdated driver during the process, giving the new driver a clean slate to work with.

As for your question about whether it's an Intel or Windows issue — that's a great observation! The clean driver installation should help us determine exactly that. We're looking forward to hearing your results!

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions before proceeding. We're here to help!

Yes, this was generally my plan, i.e. download the designated driver to my desktop, then disable WiFi and uninstall/reinstall.  The only remaining minor concern is that I'll end up with a driver that doesn't work.  My escape strategy would then be to go find an Ethernet cable and plug that into the PC and the TMHI modem/router, and then try to figure out how to find and install a working WiFi driver.  Admittedly this is an unlikely scenario.

This will be done in the morning, and I'll report back.

Hello again Jonzyl, Nathaniel -

As earlier instructed, I followed the steps and the quick answer is that the driver update from Dell was successfully installed and I have WiFi. (Although I haven't restarted subsequent to installing the new driver, which I should have done before writing this, but I'll test it out shortly and report back if there are any issues.)

Here's the TL/DR diary:

1. Downloaded both drivers. Intel was straightforwardly labeled, the Dell driver was in Dell-code, i.e. something like ...BE2XX-AX4XX...WiFi Driver...24.20.0.4.  Since it did say 'WiFi Driver', I suppose it's the right one.  Dated Jan 12, 2026.

2. Turned WiFi off.

3. Uninstalled driver, restarted PC.

4. <Additional Instruction Set?> Driver still appeared, checked box 'Attempt to remove drivers from this device', uninstalled, restarted, driver reappeared.  Clicked through to 'Devices by driver' uninstalled again, restarted, and driver was gone.

5. Right clicked on Dell driver, clicked run as admin, installation successful, WiFi is on.

So, going forward, I guess I'll just wait for the next Intel or Windows update, follow that process and see if things go properly.  We won't know anything until then, although as soon as this gets sent, I am going to reboot which will be the first reboot subsequent to the driver replacement.  If you don't hear anything from me further, you'll know it went well and I'll just say thank you for the guidance and follow up.

Hi CharlieATL,

Thank you so much for your response.

We're glad to hear that the Dell OEM driver was successfully installed and that your WiFi is back up and running! It sounds like you handled the troubleshooting process really well.

Whenever you get a chance, we'd love to hear back from you after your reboot and after the next Windows or Intel update to confirm whether everything continues to work smoothly. Your feedback is really valuable for documentation purposes and helps us ensure that our recommendations are effective.

Of course, there's no pressure at all - we completely understand if you're busy. But if you do have a moment to let us know how things go, we'd truly appreciate it!

Thanks again for your patience and cooperation throughout this process!
