Follow up: AX210 System Crash after iwlwifi Queue Stuck Error - Issue Persists

Hello Intel Community,

This is a follow up to a previous thread regarding a frequent crash experienced with AX210 on Linux. Please see the following thread for technical details and steps taken to help troubleshoot the issue: https://community.intel.com/t5/Wireless/AX210-System-Crash-after-iwlwifi-Queue-Stuck-Error-Issue/m-p/1562147/thread-id/51854

The thread was abruptly closed and locked without a clear resolution or path forward. Since it was locked, there was no way to reply and ask for clarifications on the next steps. The purpose of this new post is to ask for those clarifications.

For context, the thread was closed with the following statement:

"After further review of this case, we would like to let you know that in this scenario the next thing to do will be to get in contact directly with ASUS Support for further assistance as AMD is not compatible with the Operating System, therefore there is a limitation we can't address"

1. When you say "AMD is not compatible with the Operating System", could you please clarify how AMD is related to this issue? Are you saying that AMD is not compatible with Linux? This is a very confusing statement to make.

2. In the thread, another member and I went through several troubleshooting steps at the direction of @IsaacQ_Intel to identify that the issue we are experiencing seems to be related to ASPM. I assume that given ASPM is negotiated by the BIOS, this is why @Alberto_R_Intel directed us to contact ASUS support. My question here is, what am I contacting them about? Should we be suggesting a fix to the ASPM negotiation? Should we be suggesting they disable ASPM? If the direction is to contact ASUS support, I'd like to contact them with some clear direction on what issue it is that needs to be fixed. It was never confirmed to me that ASPM is indeed the issue.

3. What is the limitation that needs to be addressed by ASUS?

Thank you for time and patience as we work through this issue together!

Adam

Hello _adam_,

Thank you for patiently waiting. Upon checking your post, I noticed that you are using an ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI. Upon checking the supported operating system of this motherboard, it only shows Windows-based OS. Just to confirm, is this the correct specification of your motherboard? You may check its specification at this link: https://rog.asus.com/my/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-x670e-e-gaming-wifi-model/spec/

Additionally, we have requested to contact ASUS before because the wireless is preinstalled with the motherboard and the Original Equipment Manufacturer which is ASUS, may have modified the supported operating system. For now, kindly please confirm first the specific model of your motherboard so we can answer your questions in detail. Thank you.

Hello @RamyerM_Intel,

Thanks for following up! I would like to confirm that yes, "ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI" is indeed the motherboard that is in my system. I agree that the specification of the motherboard at the link you provided does also only list Windows operating systems. I would like to point out the following page that is present on the ASUS website: https://www.asus.com/Static_WebPage/OS-Compatibility/

Specifically under the "Linux" section, there is an "All Support List" link which leads to the following document containing a list of ASUS motherboards that have confirmed Linux compatibility: https://dlcdnimgs.asus.com/websites/global/aboutASUS/OS/Linux_Status_report_202312.pdf. The document contains an entry for "ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING WIFI" which lists compatibility with "Redhat 8.6", which is a Linux-based operating system. It's unfortunate that this documentation is not more readily accessible from somewhere like the link you provided, but alas, it does exist!

Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide that will help lead to a resolution to this issue!

Thanks

Adam

Hello _adam_,

Thank you for confirming your motherboard model and for the link you provided for the Linux compatibility. To answer your initial questions, I have them detailed in the numbered list below:

  1. AMD is the name of a company that produces various types of processors, such as CPUs and GPUs. Linux is an operating system that can run on different types of processors. AMD and Linux are not inherently incompatible, but they may require different drivers or settings to work properly. When I said "AMD is not compatible with the Operating System", I was referring to a specific issue that some users have reported with certain AMD products and Linux distributions.
  2. ASPM is a feature that allows the PCIe devices to enter lower power states when they are not in use, which can save energy and reduce heat generation. However, ASPM may also cause some compatibility or stability issues with some devices or platforms, depending on the implementation and configuration. This is why IsaacQ_Intel suggested you to disable ASPM in the BIOS and see if that resolves the issue. Alberto_R_Intel directed you to contact ASUS support because your motherboard is an ASUS product, and they may have more information or updates on how to fix the ASPM negotiation or disable it for your specific model. You should contact them with the details of your system, the issue you are facing, and the steps you have tried so far. You should also mention that you suspect ASPM may be the cause of the problem, and ask them if they have any solutions or recommendations for your situation.
  3. The limitation that needs to be addressed by ASUS is the proper implementation and configuration of ASPM for your motherboard and the devices connected to it. ASPM is a complex feature that involves the interaction of the BIOS, the OS, the device drivers, and the hardware. It may require firmware updates, driver updates, BIOS settings, or OS settings to work correctly and efficiently. ASUS is responsible for providing the firmware and BIOS for your motherboard, and they may have more insight into how ASPM works on their product and how to optimize it for your system. They may also be able to provide you with a workaround or a fix for the issue you are experiencing.

Concerning the supported operating system, it's still best to check with ASUS the exact and supported operating system of your motherboard. Because I have noticed that the technical specification and the OS compatibility list on the website are not consistent. You may reach out to them using this link: https://www.asus.com/support/

@RamyerM_Intel,

Thank you so much for the detailed response! This really helps me understand what our next steps are with ASUS to hopefully find a suitable long-term resolution to this issue.

I do have one follow up question related to your response to question #1 to make sure my understanding is correct:

- When you say, "AMD and Linux are not inherently incompatible, but they may require different drivers or settings to work properly.", this would also be the case with Intel and Linux, correct? There is nothing inherently different about how Intel devices interact with Linux, yes?

Again, I really appreciate you taking the time to construct such a clear, informative response. This really helps folks such as myself find a longer-term solution to issues such as these so everyone can enjoy a stable experience with your products!

Thanks

Adam

Hello _adam_,

It is our pleasure answering your inquiries as we want to empower our community. Intel devices and Linux can work together, but they may need different settings or options to do so. They communicate with each other in the same way, with no major differences. However, some specific features or functions may not be fully supported or optimized by the default drivers or settings. Therefore, it may be necessary to make some manual adjustments or updates to ensure proper functionality. You may also visit this link for more information: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005511/wireless.html

I hope I was able to clarify it for you. Should you have additional questions, feel free to ask by replying to this post.

Hello @RamyerM_Intel,

Thanks for checking! At this point in time I don't have any additional questions. I've opened a case with ASUS to pursue this further, so if I have any additional questions for you, I won't hesitate to create a new thread to ask.

Thank you for all the help!
