I’m trying to better understand how electricity usage changes over time on Intel-based systems, especially those that stay powered on for long hours (home offices, monitoring setups, or always-on PCs).
Rather than focusing on peak load, I’m more interested in long-term usage patterns — for example, how background processes, idle states, or light workloads contribute to overall power consumption.
I’d like to know:
What tools or methods do you use to track power usage trends on Intel systems?
Do you rely more on OS-level stats, BIOS/firmware data, or external measurement?
Any practical tips to reduce unnecessary power draw without affecting stability?
Looking for real-world experiences and simple approaches that actually help make sense of usage data over time.

@caseyhunt Have you looked into the System overview analysis with Vtune? That might help you with some of the use cases you mentioned https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/docs/vtune-profiler/user-guide/2025-4/system-overview-analysis.html

One additional thing I’ve noticed is that long-term power trends become clearer when usage is reviewed over fixed time periods instead of focusing on short peaks. Combining OS-level stats with occasional external measurements seems to give a more realistic picture of everyday power consumption.
