Hello,
I need help working through the steps getting VTune 2.0 installed. I must say I'm surprised at the age of the release and documents, elsewhere saw a note by jdg dated 5/21/04 saying to expect v3.0 with support for RedHatEL3.0 in about amonth... from then ! My CD is v 2.0.348 dated 12/3/03. Looked under Files Download, only see patches that require installation of 2.0 first.
Anyway, here's what all I have. Any pointers and tips much appreciated !
Thanks,
-rajeev-

Sorry for the confusion Rajeev!
Hands down, you should be working with vtl 3.0 at this point, which is a very very mature beta product, with general availability due in DEC 2004.
Here's where you register for it (fast and free):
http://www.intel.com/software/products/vtune/beta/vt_pa_linux_beta_external.htm
1) you should uninstall any partial installs of vtl before installing the beta
2) After you register at the above URL, you'll receive a confirmation email with an attached beta software license and detailed download instructions
3) that license is good until the end of DEC 2004, so you can really get the chance to kick the tires before having to make a purchase decision
ALSO, by downloading the beta you gain access to Intel's Premier Suport website, for any issues you may bump into.
cheers
jdg

Thanks, jdg.
3.0.016 Build 620 is now successfully installed. Now I have to learn to use it ! (I printed out some docs and downloaded a course from the software college.)

CONGRATs, rajeev. Some of my favorite reading:
USER GUIDE, the sections called QUICK START (one for callgraph, one for sampling)
Bring up a browser, and load this file:
/opt/intel/vtune/doc/users_guide/index.htm
also, these man pages:
$ man vtl
$ man vtlec
$ man sampling
$ man callgraph
$ man 7 source
$ man ActivityController (note upper case A and C)
The reference manual is a good encyclopedia of processor events: you may want to kick the tires on reading that soon after you dig in:
/opt/intel/vtune/docs/reference/index.htm
cheers
jdg
