Last week, Intel joined 5,000 Hispanic students, professionals, corporate representatives, educators and community leaders from all over the United States at the 2010 Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Conference (SHPE) held in Cincinnati, Ohio. While students took advantage of opportunities to enhance their professional and personal skills via technical workshops and networking opportunities, most corporate representatives spent their time in search of top Hispanic talent.
Intel’s presence was incredible! Between recruiting, technical paper and poster competitions, workshops, pre-collegiate receptions, the President’s breakfast and Extreme Engineering challenge, our team of 16 Intel employees could barely keep up with which Intel sponsored event they should attend. Here’s a glimpse of our presence over the four days of SHPE! (And there are photos here!)
Extreme Engineering Challenge
Most of our team arrived on Wed in time to prepare for the 24 hour Extreme Engineering challenge that started Wednesday evening and went straight through Thursday evening. This year, our recruiters spent time as consultants for the competition to get a real-time view of students’ abilities to design, build and solve tough problems while under a stressful deadline (the entire competition lasted 24 hours!) There’s much more to the Extreme Engineering Challenge—so much that we’ll be posting a separate video soon to cover it.)
Workshops
While Intel employees took turns swapping in and out as consultants for the Extreme Engineering challenge, 2 blocks away, Intel employees were leading workshops. Senior Principle Engineer, Alberto Martinez, discussed USB3 Architecture with approximately 60 students, explaining its benefits and tremendous increase in download speeds in a workshop titled ‘From PC to Player in 5 seconds.’ A couple of hours later, Software Director of LAN Access Division, Mary Willner, provided tips and techniques on ‘Surviving the Technical & Behavioral Interview’ to a packed room of 100+ students.
Career Fair
Friday was the opening of the Career Fair. Hiring managers began the search for future rock stars and extended the search into the evening, where 70 of the top candidates we met that day had the opportunity to attend an Invite only Networking suite for more intimate conversations, along with some food and fun! For all of you job seekers out there, here’s a tip for you: Visit the companies you’re most interested in on the first day of the Career Fair. Many organizations have private, invite-only events during the first evening of a career fair and the only way to snag an invite is to meet them at their booth earlier in the day!

As a sponsor of the Pre-Collegiate Symposia, several Intel employees met with students to discuss career options and education. Two of our employees, Ernesto Felix and Isaura Gaeta, presented several times during the symposia, emphasizing the importance of studying a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) discipline and the possibilities that come along with that type of degree. The dedication and passion for technology that the students showed, especially at a young age, was inspiring.
Saturday morning, Intel sponsored the President’s breakfast, an event specifically for the leaders of SHPE collegiate and professional chapters. Rosalind Hudnell, Director of Global Diversity, provided the keynote speech and addressed Intel’s transformation to a computing solution company and the growth of technology and projected trends of Hispanic consumers.
Last but not least, the conference closed with a bang late Saturday evening with an Awards Gala where Intel received a plaque for being a sponsor of SHPE’s Pre-college Symposia!
As you see, SHPE provided a broad range of activities throughout the conference and the Intel team stayed engaged throughout the week through their many roles as mentors, facilitators, judges, recruiters, and more!
