A 24-year veteran of Intel, Mike Uhl, leads a global engineering organization within the Client Computing Group (CCG). He came to Intel with a background in high performance computing and began his career with a focus on pre-silicon chipset validation. Validation remained a common thread throughout his journey as an engineer, manager, and now vice president of the Windows Systems and Software organization. One of the most fulfilling parts of his role is growing the next generation of leaders and helping them achieve their greatest potential.
Mike shares his thoughts on why Intel is a great place for software engineers to grow and develop their careers:
What makes Intel a software company?
Intel develops software every day to unleash the power of our silicon. Our software architects and developers are involved in every phase of the product lifecycle, from product concept and architecture definition, through validating and optimizing the final software stack with DevOps and telemetry solutions. Intel also works closely with operating system partners and application providers to advance the industry.
What makes the culture so great in your organization?
The Client Computing Group at Intel has a fantastic culture with a deep rooted validation spirit and a tenacious desire to compete and partner with our customers to deliver high quality products. I wake up every day excited to be a part of this group and humbled to lead our talented team of software and system experts. Our culture and values show best through our teamwork and the way we support each other. More times than not, it is someone’s confidence in another person that makes the difference for that person to achieve more.
What is your group doing that makes Intel an exciting place to be?
We integrate the latest silicon, platform, and software technology to deliver the world’s most advanced personal computers at an unprecedented scale to keep the world connected, learning, and productive. CCG products are the most visible manifestation of the Intel brand, and our engineers are passionate about applying their systems and software expertise to deliver leadership solutions.
How do you foster an environment of inclusion in your group?
Everything we do at Intel benefits from inclusion by ensuring we take full advantage of each individual’s unique capabilities and contributions. Fostering an environment that thrives with diverse perspectives requires role models and advocates at every level of the organization. It starts with Inclusion as one of Intel’s core values and grows by frequently seeking employee feedback on how we can continue to improve. For example, I’m proud to see female technical leadership representation significantly increasing in my organization—but it’s not just about having a seat at the table. Inclusion also means having the opportunity to speak and be heard, and to ensure everyone has growth and advancement opportunities.
What are you proud to be able to bring to the table for your group and Intel?
One of my favorite quotes is “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.” To me, this epitomizes our One Intel spirit—how we work together to deliver truly amazing products. This perspective has guided me throughout my career. Ultimately, it’s about being part of the greater whole and enriching people’s lives with our technology.
