The Intel® Server GPU - ideal for Android cloud gaming and OTT live streaming

As you may have seen at Intel’s Architecture Day, we are excited to announce the Intel® Server GPU—Intel's first Xe architecture-based discrete graphics processing unit for data centers. Our new GPU is ideally suited for high-density, low-latency Android cloud gaming and high-density media transcode/encode for real-time over the top (OTT) video streaming.

As cloud gaming and OTT video streaming grows, Communication Service Providers (CoSPs) and Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) are looking for ways to reduce infrastructure capital and operational costs, while still providing a high-level of service and performance. According to the Cisco VNI report, video will account for 82% of the global IP traffic by 2022 and live video will increase fifteen-fold from 2017 to 2022 to reach 17% of internet video traffic. Over the same time period, gaming traffic is expected to grow nine-fold. Leveraging Intel’s Visual Cloud technologies, the Intel Server GPU delivers to meet the market need - with a high number of concurrent streams out of a single server.  More stream density means service providers can reach more gamers and viewers with less server infrastructure, reduced capital expenditures and lower operating costs.

The Intel Server GPU lowers the barriers to entry for CoSPs and CSPs to expand into Android cloud gaming to create new revenue sources and differentiating services, particularly as 5G takes hold. Similarly, service providers can reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) and improve performance of real-time, OTT video streaming through high-density, media transcoding and encoding.

Our new GPU supports AVC, HEVC, MPEG2, VP9 encode/decode and AV1 decode. Coupled with 3rd Generation Intel Xeon processors, it delivers next generation datacenter media and graphics acceleration solution for customers that previously used the Intel Visual Compute Accelerator Card (VCA2) with Intel Xeon E3 Processors.

Support for Open and Free Software

The Intel Server GPU supports open source software to help accelerate development efforts, including:

  • Optimized media plug-in for FFMPEG, a widely used industry standard open source framework for video streaming applications, enabling application compatibility across Intel Xeon Scalable Processors and our new Intel Server GPU.

  • Intel Media SDK open source software library—a single, comprehensive API for developers who want direct access to video transcode hardware to add their own differentiation.

  • Mesa 3D Graphics Library—an open source implementation of OpenGL and other 3D graphics APIs.

Our technologies are part of a broad portfolio of hardware, software, industry standard frameworks and ecosystem support designed to provide the right power, price and performance across a range of cloud and edge workloads for our customers. And I’m proud of what our new Intel Server GPU adds to the family.
