I210 iNVM programming issues

I have a board where I would like to use an I210 to connect my CPU to an Ethernet switch over SGMII. The board currently has a 4Mbit SPI flash connected to each I210, a Microchip SST25VF040B-50-4I-QAF-T, but for the next revision I think I'll switch to a 16Mbit SPI flash, the Macronix MX25V1635FZNI.

I am running Linux. I need to program the I210's iNVM with MAC address and also (I think) tell it to use SGMII. I ran this command:

sudo ./eeupdate64e /nic=1 /file=I210_Invm_SerDesKX_NoAPM_v0.6.txt /invmupdate /mac=524658000001

I did get one error "Error: Connection to QV driver failed - please reinstall it!"

And while the NIC no longer shows up as unprogrammed when I run LSPCI, if I run ip link it shows as having all zeroes for the mac address. This remains the same after a restart.

Any feedback on what I am doing wrong? Do I need to figure out the QV driver issue?

Further - is the iNVM one time programmable? So if I get this wrong do I have to replace the IC?

Lastly is the I210_Invm_SerDesKX_NoAPM_v0.6.txt file correct for SGMII or is that only for 1000BASE-KX? That is from "513655_I210_I211_Production_images". I am using the eeupdate64e tool from Quartzville Tools_745290.
