HDAUDIO to HDMI AUDIO, UHSI SD card mode.

Hi,

I'm currently working on a hardware project with Baytrail E3800 series and need to be guided to the right information.

1) Do you have any application notes, schematics of how to interface a HDAUDIO codec to HDMI AUDIO?

2) I have not seen any Intel design implementing the 3.3V to 1.8V switch for SD card. Why is that? Doesn't it work?

3) Using the UHSI modes on SD card requires switching to 1.8V. Bay trail has all the signals. Do you have any application note on that?

4) In implementing a consumer product with these features, is help available from Intel?

Best regards,

B-O

Hello B-O,

Thank you for contacting the Intel Embedded Community.

The HD Audio information that may help you is stated in section 10, on pages 178, 179, 180, and 181 of the https://edc.intel.com/Link.aspx?id=7001 Intel(R) Atom(TM) Processor E3800 Product Family Platform: Design Guide.

On the other hand, the information that may help you to answer the rest of your questions is stated at the Carlos_A.

I have checked it out. There are no information about feeding the audio codec output to the HDMI however.

Any tips on that?

Hello B-O,

Thanks for your reply.

In order to be in the same page, could you please tell us if your codec question is related to hardware or software focus? Please give us a detailed explanation.

Thanks in advance for your clarification.

Best Regards,

Carlos_A.

Hi Carlos,

We are currently developing our own Minnowboards. In the process we are adding and fixing some features to better fit the consumer market.

One of them is to provide AUDIO on the HDMI interface. Our major concern is compatibility, so we will use a HD AUDIO codec that is supported by all operating systems. However, I'm looking for information about how to feed the codec AUDIO output stream to the HDMI interface.

We will also provide the 3.3V - 1.8V switching for SD memory cards required to use UHS-I mode. That will allow us to double the SD card transfer rate. Unfortunately the chipset are not allowing the SDR104 mode, so we can only double the speed from 3.3V High Speed (25 MB/s) to UHS-I SDR50/DDR50 (50 MB/s). That's why I asked for reference material for that as all designs I have seen used fixed 3.3V, thus limiting the the maximum transfer rate to 25 MB/s.

Best regards,

Hi Carlos,

From various sources it seems like an external codec in not needed for display port or HDMI audio output. It looks like the E3800 series chip has a built in HDMI audio codec. The HD audio unit can use this internal codec to produce HDMI audio output. Can you verify with your internal sources?

If this is true, the Minnowboard Max and Turbot will be able to have HDMI audio if the HD audio device is activated in PCI configuration space. Please, confirm!

Best regards,

B-O

Hello B-O,

Thanks for your updates.

The Bay Trail-I has an HD audio internal codec. This information and more details are stated on page 33 of the https://edc.intel.com/Link.aspx?id=7002 Intel(R) Atom(TM) Processor E3800 Product Family Platform (Formerly Bay Trail-I) Design-In Presentation document # 513067.

By the way, we suggest you review as a reference the information stated at the following web sites:

Please keep in mind that you need to contact the manufacturer of your motherboard to receive further help because they have all the information related to their products. Also, to receive the further drivers, because they have modified the devices where the video, audio, or other features are generated. Thank you Carlos,

For your information we are developing our own Minnowboard, compatible with Minnowboard Max and Turbot, but with some improvements towards the consumer market.

The information I got from you helped me a lot and I will not need an external HD audio codec on the boards. This is fortunate, as some of the main vendors in the audio codec field are so arrogant that they will not even reply to request to either support or sales.

Thank you Intel, for your excellent design and good support!
