thermal Problem with PC82573L

lately we have more and more often the problem that the Ethernet connection at about 50 ° C ambient temperature (about 65 ° C on the chip) turns off suddenly at this chip. After cooling and restart the module is working again.

Hello IesY1!

While the team looks for a solution to your question, I thought that I would include the datasheet for this product for your reference and anyone else who reads this thread. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ethernet-controllers/82573-gbe-controllers-datasheet.html Intel® 82573 Gigabit Ethernet Controllers: Datasheet. Have a nice day and you'll be hearing from the team shortly. LynnZ.

Welcome to the Embedded Community!

Could you please verify if your equipment currently uses the last https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=Intel%C2%AE+82573L+Gigabit+Ethernet+Controller controller's version for the correct OS?

According to table 21. Thermal resistance values from http://www.intel.com/content/dam/doc/datasheet/82573-gbe-controllers-datasheet.pdf datasheet:

"Real system designs may have different characteristics due to board thickness, arrangement of ground planes, and proximity of other components."

Referring to https://www-ssl.intel.com/content/www/us/en/embedded/products/networking/82573-gbe-controllers-spec-update.html Intel® 82573 Family GbE Controllers: Specification Update, Section 5.0 Errata, 19 Thermal Diode Issue:

"When 82573 3.3V supply transitions from high to low, a voltage drop on the thermal pads (ThermN/ThermP) may be observed. This is because the ESD protection diode between the ThermP pad and 3.3V is forward biased when 3.3V is removed and some models of thermal sensor do not provide enough current to drive both ESD and Thermal Diodes. This results in the pulse amplitude from the thermal sensor to be dragged down."

Incorrect voltage on the thermal pads can result in inaccurate die temperature measurements.

Workaround: Intel recommends masking the Thermal sensor reading measurement when 82573 is powered off. Intel also recommends leaving the 3.3V supply greater than or equal to 0.7V to avoid the ThermP pad voltage drops.

Best Regards.
