I just purchased 4 Dell Optiplex 960 computers with WIndows 7 x64. I am having this issue on all 4 machines. Intermittently the computer disconnects from the network and also at times it will show that it is a 10mb connection. I updated the drivers to 11.5.10 dated 12/10/2009. The error in the event log is source: e1kexpress Event ID 27 "Network link has been disconnected." The workstations all connect to a Dell switch.

I spoke to Dell and they have no clue.

Help is appreciated.

We are currently experiencing this same problem on multiple Dell Optiplex 960 computers. The NIC is an 82567LM-3 and we are not able to adjust the SIPS setting in the driver dialog box. We are having problems with disconnects using Windows XP. I'm looking forward to seeing some updates hopefully from the intel guy .

I am seeing this issue as well. Reverted to the Microsoft driver, however I'm not convinced this actually fixed this issue, it seems that the disconnects are simply not being shown in the log. I am still recieving complaints that all seem to trace back to a network issue. I'm most likely going to replace the cards soon.

I used the hp/intel driver on one workstation for a test but still getting the problem, sage (when left for sometime) is loosing network connectivity (machine does not hibernate) ... ah saying that sleep mode is off but Hybrid sleep mode is ON. I have now turned this off and I'm testing it will report back next week.

More info on it here:

Hybrid sleep is another new power-saving feature designed primarily for desktop computers. Hybrid sleep saves any open documents and programs to memory and to your hard disk, and then puts your computer into a low-power state.

Unlike mobile PCs, desktop computers typically don't have battery-based power backup. So if a sudden power failure occurs to a desktop computer in standard sleep mode, data loss could occur.

But with hybrid sleep turned on, Windows can restore your work from your hard disk. On desktop computers, hybrid sleep is typically turned on by default.

When hybrid sleep is turned on, clicking Sleep automatically puts your computer into hybrid sleep. When hybrid sleep is turned off, or if your computer doesn't support hybrid sleep, clicking Sleep puts the computer to sleep.

To turn hybrid sleep on or off:

  1. Open Power Options by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.

  2. On the Select a power plan page, click Change plan settings under the selected plan.

  3. On the Change settings for the plan page, click Change advanced power settings.

  4. On the Advanced settings tab, expand Sleep, expand Allow hybrid sleep, and then do one of the following:

    • If you are using a mobile PC, click On battery or Plugged in (or both), click the arrow, and then click On.

    • If you are using a desktop computer, click Setting, click the arrow, and then click On.

  5. Click OK, and then click Save changes.

Gah that hasn't worked either anyone have an other ideas I have 8 pc's all doing the same thing i.e. network dropping causing sage to drop then reconnect again, just annoying for customer and a pain for remote users.

Thanks

The e1k driver used by the 82567LM Network Connection was updated in the version 15.2 software release.

Search http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx Download Center for 82567 drivers 15.2 and choose your version of Windows from the list.

I hope this helps you. Let us know.

OK, so I have installed the Intel PROSet 15.2.89.0 driver package on a Dell Optiplex 960 (Win7/32) that has been having this problem (one of many!) since December.

(note: the "driver" tab on Windows Hardware Properties says.... Driver Date = 4/12/2010 and Driver Version = 11.6.92.0 .... just FYI)

Funny I saw this as I had just contacted Dell on this again this morning. I don't want to be too negative about Dell on this, but it does not seem that they have been as proactive as they needed to be on this...maybe that is just my perception. I have seen this on probably a dozen or more 960s I have in the field. And maybe it is/was an Intel issue...but I bought the box from Dell!

We'll let this "bake" and see if the error crops up again over the weekend, or beyond.

I appreciate you not letting this "die". Thank you.

John

I must admit that I've been lurking on this tread for some time and I though it was time to put in my $.02. I have a Dell Optiplex 780 with a Q45 chipset. This computer was delivered on December 31 with Windows 7 / 64 factory installed.

Event viewer is filled with e1kexpress entries "Intel(R) 82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection Network link has been disconnected" messages. Current driver is version 11.5.4.0

The issue ranges from an annoyance to a almost complete loss of connectivity. The computer is set to "idle" at 30 minutes where the display is shut down and the CPU is allowed to go to to 5%. This is basically the Dell "Balanced" setting for power savings. Upon wakeup from this mode, the NIC re-establishes a connection and logs a warning. No big deal. I see an indication in the "tray" that the network is re-connecting and 5 seconds later everything is up and running again. Interestingly, the computer is receiving Email during the power reduction but apparently can't seamlessly wake up again without glitching the NIC.

At 2 hours of no activity, the computer will go into standby. Wake-up is via keystroke. At this point, the computer will wake up with little or no connectivity. Browsing the Internet is just about as fast as a 1200 baud modem although the NIC status reports 100mb. Simply disabling the LAN adapter and re-enabling the LAN adapter restores the computer to full connectivity.

What I've done: The computer is connected to an Actiontec Router which is included with Verizon Fios. I've re-configured the router and NIC for a fixed IP with auto-negotiation turned off. In the device manager, all 3 "Wake on LAN" features are un-checked. VLAN is disabled. None of these changes produced any improvement.

I hope there is clue in here somewhere. I also have a Optiplex 760 with Windows XP using a 82567LM driver dated June 2008 that has performed flawlessly. It makes me wonder if I should be rolling back the driver or moving forward.

Quick update on my end with the new driver package. It has been running 6 days now and I have not received the "disconnected" error once. Not ready to claim victory yet, but this is encouraging!

Again, my machine is a Dell Optiplex 960 running Win7/32

John,

Thanks for the update. I have the same configuration you do so I am keen to hear your experience. I may have to give this new driver a try. I assume you are also not seeing the drops to 10Mbps?

With the latest driver today the event viewer was showing:

Intel(R) 82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection

Network link is disconnected.

So, it doen't seem to be fixed.

PS: I didn't disconnect the network cable ever.

I may have some progress to report on my Windows 7 Professional Optiplex 780 (Q45 chipset). I rolled back the driver to Microsoft version 10.5.1.0. This was suggested some time back on this thread so I gave it a try. Much to my surprise, the driver is already on my machine and was the last item on the list when I "Browsed my computer for driver software".

The bad news is that it behaved just like before but without the error messages this time. Upon waking up from sleep mode, the connectivity was extremely slow. The good news is that this driver has a power management option that can be unchecked to prevent the OS from powering down the "device". With the power-down option disabled, the disconnect problem seems have been resolved!

Thanks Wayne. On the Optiplex 960 I posted about earlier, computer has exhibited occasional connection issues even afer downgrade to MS driver 10.5.1.0 several months ago. Symptom is usually inability to find domain controller for group policy processing.

Following your suggestion, I opened the network adapter settings, went to the Power Settings tab, and UNchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." We'll see if that makes a difference.

Would like to hear from anyone else who has tried the latest Intel driver since Mark H of Intel posted on May 7.

Just an update -- no issues here since May 7th and the updated driver (see my earlier posts)

So that is pretty promising!

I checked the Dell support website, and there is no Network Driver update posted there.... so either they dont understand the issue, or just slow reacting to it. I plan to install the update package on the crop of other 960s I have running.

I have 2 Dell Optiplex 780 with Windows 7 x64 installed on them with the Intel 82567LM-3 cards installed. I'm been working with Dell on this problem for some time now and can't seem to get anywhere with them. They had me swap out the system board and memory, reinstall the OS, and now want to ship me new computers.

The Intel driver v11.5.4.0 and v11.0.41.250 give the same systems: The NIC will disconnect when resuming from sleep mode and reconnect at 10 MBps and then on then on the next wake from sleep will disconnect and then reconnect at 1 GBps.

The Intel driver v11.6.92.0 mentioned above corrects the 10 MBps connection problem but we still experience the same disconnect/reconnect pattern when resuming from sleep mode.

The Windows 7 supplied Intel driver v10.5.1.0 does not exhibit the disconnect/reconnect pattern when resuming from sleep mode.

Hi Guys,

I've been working with multiple vendors to come out with a solution for this issue. After searching forums and other users experience and feedback from Dell Support.

Intermittent Network Connection *Known Issue*

Especially with the Intel 82567 network cards. The MAC Addressing system is typically 00:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX; the new MAC Addressing system is starting with A4:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX; this is causing problems with proxies, routers, and wireless bridges that are not able to properly send traffic when the first octet of the MAC is not 00 or 0X.

You should report this to your network equipment vendor as soon as possible for a firmware upgrade, or search to see if one is already available. You can also do a workaround by changing the MAC Address to the network card in the windows registry.

To change the MAC Address of the Network Card, follow these steps:

1. Create a text file in Notepad by cutting and pasting following text and save it as it DELLMAC.REG

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\000X]

"NetworkAddress"="00DE11078001"

2. Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT.EXE /S DELLMAC.reg and press <<strong>Enter>. Answer Yes to enter the information into the registry.

3. Reboot the system

Note: Make sure to increment the MAC Address so that they are not duplicated: 00DE11078001, 00DE11078002, 00DE11078003, etc…

This is my conclusion:

1) Rollback to old Intel NIC driver 10.5.1.0

2) Try to change the mac of your workstation, however in my environment I would need to increment hundreds of registry files, no fix for this at the moment.

3) Update Switch/Router firmware

Currently I'm going to test the MAC registry change.

Please let me know if anyone else has come up with a solution, but it appears only option 1 and 2 seem to be working. I'm suprised production environments with 1000's of workstations havent had more complaints.

Looks quite hush on Dell / HP support as its only an internal bulletin.

Regards,

QuA

Well that's interesting. Never would have thought to look at MAC address.

I have an Optiplex 960 with an 82567LM-3, running 32-bit Windows 7. It had been doing okay with the native Windows 7 driver but still sometimes having trouble finding the domain controller and time server on startup.

On 6/16, I updated to Intel 82567 network driver (version 15.2, with Driver Version 11.6.92.0) from the Intel download center. So far that has been working well: the machine seems to connect quickly enough to the domain controller that it is not complaining about group policy and time services like before.

I notice that the MAC address is now 00-24-E8-3C-xx-xx. Maybe that was part of the change when I upgraded the driver?

Of the two batches of Optiplex 960s we bought last year they all have always had MACs starting with 00-24... I dont think this is entirely the issue.

I thought the agressive power saving/link speed change was causing the disconnects?

The latest drivers do seem to work (if you disable SIPS) but I think WOL is broken completely? Also we are still waiting on a manual speed setting for WOL which should help fix other issues.
