SR-IOV control physical link problem.

Hi,

I'm using Intel Ethernet Connection X553 with SR-IOV in Ubuntu 18.04

I would link to be able to set the PF link to up/down (for example "ifconfig eth4 down").

The problem is that after setting it down and up I'm getting errors when calling vf functions (for example - IXGBE_VF_SET_VLAN return IXGBE_VT_MSGTYPE_NACK).

Is there any option to close only the physical link without affecting the VF functionality.

Regards,

Amir.

Hello Amir,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

Please provide the following details for us to check on your query.

1.) What is the ixgbe driver version you used?

2.) Please share the link on where did you download the driver.

3.) What is the exact brand and model of the board?

Looking forward to your reply.

Best regards,

Hi,

I've tested it with both the Kernel driver:

ixgbe 5.1.0-k

ixgbevf 4.1.0-k

And with latest drivers from Intel site:

ixgbe 5.6.1

ixgbevf 4.6.1

The board is Dell VEP 1400 but I can see this issue also in other board with the same Intel X553 (in both "X553 10 GbE SFP+" and "X553 1GbE")

Amir.

Hello Amir,

We appreciate your reply.

While we are checking on your query, can you share why do you want to set the PF link to up/down? This would help us better understand your environment.

Can you also share the exact error you get when calling vf functions?

Looking forward to hear from you.

Best regards,

Hi Crisselle,

Thanks for the quick response,

This is a network appliance that in some cases we want to close the physical link (If there is any way to close the physical link without closing the PF it's also OK)

The VF is controlled by DPDK with VFIO driver, when trying to call ixgbe_set_vfta_vf after "ifconfig down and up" the ret_val from ixgbevf_write_msg_read_ack is IXGBE_VT_MSGTYPE_NACK.

In case I'm not changing the PF state after vf creating the VLAN add is OK.

Regards,

Amir.
