X722 Network Cable Unplugged on Windows Server 2019 - After operating system installation. Drivers was applied by using unattend installation.

We do have Fujitsu Primergy RX2540 M4 systems with two onboard X722 10Gbit/s NICs installed. Additionally two 2-port X550 NICs are installed.

We are deploying the operating system using a WinPE and applying the install.wim by DISM. Before the system did the restart we also copy the INTEL 24.3 NIC driver on the drive and provide a unattend.xml.

After the system restarts and finished the operating system deployment the drivers are successfully installed (checked by device manager and checking file versions).

But the onboard NIC X722 shows a status of "Network Cable Unplugged".

After disabling and re-enabling the NIC it will detect a connection successfully and it looks like reliable.

We also tried every version since 24.1 and found the same behavior for all versions.

The deployment only works if we are using built-in drivers from original Microsoft Windows Server 2019 install.wim.

Additional information:

The NICs are connected to a CISCO Nexus 2348tq - NXOS 7.3(5) and they are connected to CISCO Nexus 5648q - NXOS 7.3(5). Priority Flow Control (PFC) is not configured. LLDP is enabled on switches.

Are somebody aware of that behavior?

Thanks,

Matthias

Hello Matthias,

Thank you for posting in Intel Ethernet Communities.

Please provide the following information for us to check on your request.

1.) We'd like to confirm if the X550 NIC works. This is to isolate if the issue only happens in X722 ethernet connection

2.) System Support Utility log of your system. This will allow us to check your Adapter details and configuration. Kindly refer to the steps below.

a- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/91600/Intel-System-Support-Utility

b- Open SSU.exe

c- Mark the box "Everything" and then click "Scan".

d- When finished scanning, click "Next".

e- Click on "Save" and attach the file to a post.

Looking forward to your response.

Hello Matthias,

Thank you for the reply.

We already received the SSU log that you have provided. While we are checking on it, can you share if you have tried to raise the issue to Fujitsu? There might be same issue encountered by other user that was reported to them.

Looking forward to your response.

Hello Matthias,

Good day!

Please check and provide the following details for us to further check on this.

1.) Is there any LED lit when cable is plugged to the LAN port of X722?

2.) Have you tried to use different cable to further isolate the issue?

3.) Have you tried to use driver provided by Fujitsu? As this is an Ethernet controller that's embedded with Fujitsu system, it would be best if you can also get in touch with Fujitsu for further support since they have customized drivers and software to enable or alter features on your system. They are in best position where you can seek assistance so you don’t lose features or customizations of the Ethernet controller. Please visit this link for Support Options for Intel® Ethernet Controllers

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000006628/network-and-io/ethernet-products.html

4.) I have also managed to visit Fujitsu website but can't seem to find driver for X722. Please contact one of Fujitsu support for further assistance on which driver should be installed on your system.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Sorry for my delay. I worked hard with another customer.

1.) Is there any LED lit when cable is plugged to the LAN port of X722?

Yes, the LED is on as expected. Also from switch perspective it looks like that the network card is successfully connected.

2.) Have you tried to use different cable to further isolate the issue?

Yes, we changed the LAN cable 2 times.

It is a Fujitsu Primergy RX2540 M4 system and the newest available driver is the Intel 24.1 one: 'https://support.ts.fujitsu.com/IndexDownload.asp?Softwareguid=8FA51B9C-8163-4AD2-A012-C9CBB4FD7D81'

If I am using an older driver package released by Fujitsu it worked as expected. I am talking about Intel driver package 23.1.

4.) I have also managed to visit Fujitsu website but can't seem to find driver for X722. Please contact one of Fujitsu support for further assistance on which driver should be installed on your system.

The following link provides the driver: https://support.ts.fujitsu.com/IndexDownload.asp?Softwareguid=8FA51B9C-8163-4AD2-A012-C9CBB4FD7D81

I made a binary compare between Fujitsu's released 24.1 driver package and Intel's 24.1 released driver package and I see no difference. I was able to download the Intel 24.1 from your homepage before it was replaced by 24.2.

It seems, that the issue only occurs if the driver was provided to the newly installed operating system before it will boot up the first time (that means the driver will be added to OS disk by using current WinPE environment).

I also made a test to deploy Windows Server 2016 with Intel's driver package 23.1 and updating the driver later, that worked. And I also made the test with Windows Server 2019, but there I used the built-in driver for X722 which worked as expected and later one I updated the driver to 24.1 what does not issuing the cable unplugged behavior.

Best regards,

Matthias

Matthias

Hello Matthias,

Not a problem at all. We appreciate your time and effort in replying to our questions.

You have mentioned that you are using Windows Server 2019. However, based on the SSU you have provided, Windwos Server 2016 was installed on your system. Please confirm that exact OS installed on your system.

Please also confirm if we understand your statement correctly.

1.) The 23.1 driver package from Fujitsu worked as expected?

2.) Both 24.1 driver from Intel and Fujitsu causes the Cable Unplugged behavior?

Looking forward to your response.

Hello Crisselle,

we have more than on Fujitsu Primergy RX2540 M4 and some of them are installed using Windows Server 2019 and some are installed with Windows Server 2016. So I am able to test both operating systems as well.

To answer your questions:

1.) The 23.1 driver package from Fujitsu worked as expected?

-> That's correct for Windows Server 2016. On Windows Server 2019 we are using the built-in driver shipped with Windows Server 2019 and also that one works as expected.

2.) Both 24.1 driver from Intel and Fujitsu causes the Cable Unplugged behavior?

-> That's correct. Issue occurs on Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019.

Hope that helps.

Best regards,

Matthias

Hello Matthias,

Thank you for the reply.

Since you have mentioned that you have more than one Fujitsu Primergy RX2540 M4 that is encountering the same issue, can you share how many systems are affected? This would help us in further investigating the issue.

Looking forward to your response.

Hi Matthias,

Try to enable SR-IOV in the BIOS Menu. We had the same problem some days ago and this solved it.

BIOS Menu > Advanced >PCI Subsytem Settings > " SR-IOV Support" set to "Enabled"

Good luck,

Michael

Same here on srv2k19 with latest updates and intel driver.

Teamswitch (SET) > 2x X722 onboard SuperMicro X11DPH-T mainboard > vNics with SR-IOV enabled are showing cable unplugged.

just to clarify.

The vNICs show as cable unplugged after reboot.

Get-VMNetworkadapter -managementos doesn't list these vNICs anymore after reboot, but they are still their in DeviceManager.

We have exact the same problem, it occurs around every 2 week, We run vps servers on the machines in windows 2019

The weird thing is, the main adapter shows unplugged but the vps port shows not unplugged

Disable and enable fixes the problem

We run the latest drivers.
