XL710 no connectivity with Brocade ICX 6610 switch

I'm having the following symptom:

Host 1 has a Intel XL710 card installed.

If I connect the host to a Brocade ICX6610-48P switch via a 1m QSFP+ DAC (tried both a QSFP+ and a QSFP28 DAC), ethtool shows RX crc errors and no connectivity is possible except DHCP, which somehow works.

Monitoring the port via the switch shows packets going out and in. Monitoring the port on Host 1 shows only packets going out.

If I connect Host 1 to Host 2 (Mellanox CX3), everything works.

If I connect Host 2 to the switch, everything works.

If I connect Host 1 to Host 2 and Host 2 to the switch, and bridge the two ports of the CX3, everything works.

Another user reported similar results: https://serverfault.com/questions/1117009/cant-get-new-nic-working/1140838

I do not currently have the capability to scope QSFP+ traffic, so no idea what's actually going on on the wire.

I ran the interop diagnostic procedure detailed in https://edc.intel.com/content/www/us/en/secure/design/confidential/products/ethernet/appnote-ie-diagnostic-tool-user-guide/interoperability-debugging-steps/ -- please give me a way to securely send the resulting log files (or add Ethernet interface products to my IPS account so I can open a ticket there)

Hi KaneTW,

Good day and thank you for visiting Intel Community Support.

understood that you are having an CRC errors on your XL710 card. For this matter, please kindly help to gather the SSU logs for us to analyze further on the NIC. Refer the link below on how to gather the logs:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000008563/ethernet-products.html

Additionally, may I know previously if the NIC was running fine without the CRC errors? Was there any changes made recently that could cause the CRC errors to be prompted?

Understood that you have tried different QSFP DAC cables but issue persisted. Can you confirm if you are using compatibles DAC cables for the NIC? Refer the link below for the compatibility of the DAC cables with the XL710 card.

Hello Faez,

I've ran the SSU utility. Please provide a way to upload the data, along with the debug utility data.

The NIC has not been used before, and is failing only with this particular switch. In addition, I constructed a layer 1 network tap using a FPGA. When using the network tap, which links two PHYs directly and does nothing else, connectivity was established. The CRC of the received and transmitted packets was also correct.

I am using compatible DAC cables.

Best regards,
David Kraeutmann

I just did a sweep of pings with varying sizes (ping -s) -- the following sizes worked with tagged VLAN

Hi KaneTW,

Good day and thanks for the clarifications.

From your statement, we have another team that is suited to respond to your questions regarding on the FPGA setup. We will transfer your forum to the right team shortly.

Thanks,

Hi @KaneTW,

Thank you for posting in Intel community forum and hope all is well.

It seems that you have multiple hardware involved in this setup and FPGA being one of them.

A few clarification as below if we may asked for us to better understand the situation you have:

 - What FPGA are involved in your setup?

 - What is the purpose/application that you have with the FPGA?

 - Any IPs/design that you are utilizing for the FPGA?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Best Wishes

BB

Sorry, let me clarify the problem.

Core problem (this is the actual problem that needs to be solved):

- XL710 has bad connectivity with Brocade ICX6610 via 40GbE QSFP+ DAC.

- Only frames with specific sizes are received on the XL710. All packets are transmitted successfully.

- 10GbE seems to work fine.

Auxiliary problem (this one is unimportant):

- In order to debug what's going on layer 1 between the XL710 and switch, I used a Stratix V (don't have the exact part number right now) based FPGA board with two QSFP+ ports.

- FPGA board was connected between the switch and NIC and I connected two Intel 40G PHY IPs together directly.

- I used Signal Tap to view the RX'd packets and they were fine.

- There was some TX packet loss (outgoing from the FPGA, likely due to improper TX settings) but no longer a situation where all frames with a specific size would not be received, i.e. the core problem *only* arises on layer 1 when the switch and XL710 are connected directly.

Hi KaneTW,

Good day. Understood that you have previously gathered the SSU logs as requested. You may kindly upload the logs into this thread here for us to analyze further on the issue.

Also, to confirm on the compatibility of the QSFP+ modules, please kindly refer the link below:
